I saw that video review this morning. I think she made a lot of good points in general, but some were so ridiculous that I can’t take it seriously at all, calling cutscenes something like barely interactive flashbacks...well yeah, that’s what they are. IGN usually gives a decent glimpse into the game as it stands at time of review, but this one was a little odd to me. I still feel like judging for myself, that’s the best impression I can get.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed after seeing IGN's review, then I watched ACG's review and I'm taking his advice of "wait for sale" now. I had already per-ordered the game on PSN, but I just now called to get it refunded and will wait for a sale on it for $30 or less. I just rebuilt my PC and got a new bad-ass monitor as well anyways, so I'm going to be playing around on that for a bit now catching up on games I've been missing out on PC for a while.

Pretty disappointing for a Playstation exclusive given they have pretty much all been A+ games this generation, which is why I was pretty confident in pre-ordering it, plus I typically love games of this genre. I'm not sure how the game has so many bugs either after it was pretty much done in February when it was supposed to launch and they've had an extra few months to polish it up.

    Anyways, here's ACG's review:

73 average is not a good score for a PS4 exclusive that was hyped up for years...Sony needs a disappointment every so often to keep them grounded...

Gaemstop did a play at no risk deal with this game. Definitely returning it. Bored as hell 5 hours in.

Reviews are just some else's opinions and not your opinion on a game. The sooner people stop listening to them the better there gaming experiences will be.

I have 3-4 go to reviews sites who I trust and who's reviews generally line up with mine...usually people ignore reviews only when a game gets bad ones and they plan on getting the game anyway so they need to justify buying it...if Days Gone had gotten excellent reviews across the board then those same people who say reviews don't matter would be posting links to a bunch of review sites telling everyone how great the game is...I buy games that have gotten bad reviews if I enjoyed the beta or if it's from a developer I trust (like From Software) so reviews aren't the biggest deal to me but it does matter in terms of how a game is perceived by the general public and it does effect sales

I have a wrapped copy that has been sitting in my apartment all weekend. I'm on the fence about whether I should give it a shot or just return it. The thing is that players actually seem to enjoy this game. There's a lot of positivity going around on the daysgone subreddit. The user reviews on metacritic are also approaching 8.0.

When an aggregate of 80+ reviews provide the game with an average score then you have a better idea of the game's general appeal with a wide variety of audiences.

Just like polonyc2, I also read or listen to the review/opinion of individuals who have shown similar views and likes/dislikes as mine when it comes to games. Much better to have the opinion of others that have played the game than blindly dropping $60 based on marketing material alone.

Put in about 6-7 hours this weekend over the last 3 days, taking in the story and world. I figure this is a good time to give early impressions for some of you on the fence. I haven't experienced any bugs or issues like some people over on Reddit, so I can't really comment on those. I'm also playing at the 4K/Checkerboard setting on a PS4 Pro, and it runs and looks fantastic, without any noticeable slowdowns (of course it depends on your tolerance if you're mainly used to 60+ FPS) and very high res textures and incredible weather effects. If you didn't mind God of War performance at 4K/Checkerboard, you'll feel right at home here. Something else to note, the developer should be awarded a medal for post-game support. Yes it launched buggy and with hiccups, but there have been a slew of patches in the last few days to remedy a lot of issues, and I think that needs to be mentioned.

I think the character interaction and voice acting is god damn top notch, one of the best I've experienced since God of War last year. The story is moving a bit slow, and it takes a while to start to understand what really happened in the world. Definitely moves at a slow pace, but I didn't mind and when I did learn something, it felt really eye-opening and made you want more.

Upgrading your bike is neat, but I feel like that could have been a little bit more in-depth, not too many customization choices, but not bad (let's call it average). Riding your bike on the other hand, feels very tight and responsive. The bike feels great swerving around objects and when taking hard corners, and especially when it's pouring out and dirt gets super soggy, or when in mud.

Combat wise, stealth is excellent, and if you liked the way Uncharted did it, you'll feel at home here. Creating distractions or using things like bear traps, and then going in for the stealth kill feels satisfying. Melee combat is very solid and has a very visceral feel to it. You never feel like you could take on more than 4-5 guys at a time without having to dodge and regroup (stamina bar depletes quite fast in the early stages). It feels satisfying to land a nail bat swing to a freaker's head and having it stick there for a second as they fall to their knees. Gun play is top notch as well, and all the guns feel like they have a substantial kick and punch to them (helps that the sound design is top-notch as well). Close range with something like an AK makes you feel like Schwarzenegger in Commando, just drilling baddies full of holes as they react realistically.

Some of the things I really enjoyed were ones easily missed, like heartfelt comments and stories from the NPC's around you as they describe their last "normal" moments before everything went to hell. Or how you could come across a horde while out and about, watching in awe as 200+ of them just migrate from place to place and drink water at a lake or river while you're just a hill away (there's a great heartbeat effect that takes place when enemies are "too close", really drives home the anxiety). Looters touching your bike as you leave it somewhere to go exploring is neat to see. Running out of gas, especially at night, is god damn terrifying. All the maniacs come out at night and around 5:30PM or so, that's when shit hits the fan. Enemies are a bit more powerful, and far more aggressive and plentiful, and you can't fast travel your way out without a certain level of gas; location distance dictates how much gas you need for fast travel, and ETA to get there). If you have gas and don't want to fast travel, your bike's noises are amplified at night when everything else is dead quiet, causing all manner of creatures to hear and react (violently).

Let's talk about some of the cons/negatives I've experienced. The world has a solid amount going on, but like some reviewers/people stated, it feels like there could have been more added. There are several outposts littered around the world, and there are special events marked with a "?" (like in RDR2) that range from ambushes (you can get knocked out and brought to their camp too), to hostage situations, to tracking of animals, but I still feel like it's a bit sparse at times. It's not bad by any means, but definitely the weaker part of the game unfortunately. Hopefully as time goes on, they introduce content and world expansion to remedy some of that emptiness. I think inventory management is a bit of a mess. Your melee weapons (bread and butter of the game I'd say) sustain durability loss far too fast, forcing you to not only use parts all too often, but scavenge like a madman. I feel like a bat shouldn't be at 50-60% durability after smacking 3 people in the head 3-4 times each (you're using half of your parts availability in turn, out of 10), but what do I know about that.

I started playing and I'm having a blast. Graphics are absolutely phenomenal, possibly the best I've seen on PS4. The weather effects in particular are really well done. Bike handling is also fantastic. It feels much more simulation than arcade. Very weighty. Exploration and looting has been very fun so far. It has an addictive quality to it that makes me want to keep playing. The only complaint from me so far is the difficulty in aiming your weapon. It feels like there is a significant amount of input lag. When you release the right stick, instead of instantly coming to a stop, your aim kind of decelerates which makes it easy to overshoot your targets. Overall I think this game is another Dying Light. Fairly meh reviews from critics, but a lot of praise from the players.

Also, I was surprised to see kid zombies in this game. I thought killing kids was a big no no in video games. I mean not even GTA allows it, but it's pretty prominent here. I guess because they're freakers it's ok? At any rate, props to Sony/Bend for having the balls to include this in the game.

It's not all that taboo. I remember killing (possessed) kids in Painkiller: Battle out of hell, and killing (Necromorphs) babies in Dead Space 2. The only game I played that let you kill normal children without mods was Fallout 1 & 2, you could even receive the Childkiller rep for doing it.

I remember killing baby demons in Doom as well. In the 2005 Doom that is.

Was a very under-rated game. Never came out on PC but I still have it for my PS3. It's like God of War (classic God of War) gameplay, but with a more morbid setting and story than God of War.

I'm finding myself really caring a lot about Boozer (I'm sure that's going to end well...it always does when when I get so invested; DAMN YOU Game of Thrones). The interaction and voice acting is top god damn notch, between the silent parts during a conversation and some of the more enraged parts, I really feel like I care about the main character's inner turmoil, especially in regard to how he feels about his wife (not sure if she's alive, talking to himself, etc.).

For those of you who own and have played several hours of the game - in your opinion is it worth dropping $40 on? I see it’ll be on sale on the PS Store with the next sale.

Do people like cutscenes? I despise when a game won't let me skip them. I know it adds to the cinematic effect or whatever, but I just want to run and gun!

As long as the narrative is good more cutscenes the better. Just make them skippable for any replays.

I guess I just don't have a ton of time for gaming, and when I finally sit down to play, I hate being stuck watching cutscenes.

There were several articles saying it was $20 along with Spider-man and God of War. I was disappointed to find out it wasn't true as well. :(

Game came out Luke 5 weeks ago. It wasn't such a flop that they would of dropped it to $20 so soon. Despite the average scores it still sold really well
