I can't help myself, I have an overwhelming urge to call B.S. on this insanely crazy number. At the very least, other scientists should make them prove it. ;)

The electronics giant partnered with Kyoto University's Kiyotaka Miura to develop “semiperpetual” slivers of quartz glass that Hitachi says can preserve information for hundreds of millions of years with virtually no degradation.

good luck finding a disk drive for a hundred million year old floppy...

Is there enough quartz to store my porn collection so when the aliens defrost me I can spank off?

Really, do we need this? How far is our species, one form or the other, going to last. 10,000-20,000 years? We're going thru resources without a care in the world. 90% of the world is never ending cascade of stupid with no sense of accountability, responsibility, priorities or foresight who would rather drink that myth/nationality cool-aid( flavor-aid, for those that knew hat they really drank).

:)

Its so that when the reapers come, we can store all our data about what we learned in the battle against them so the next wave of space bound sentient life can know how to beat them once and for all.

didnt they claim this same thing when they were able to make "diamonds" that now diamonds would become the next storage medium cause it could hold hundred of gigs of data in a tiny area...

also, how do they know it will last 300M years... didnt they say DVD's would last for a 100 years...

Data stored in quartz = stone tablets?

Outside physical destruction they'll pretty much last forever.

So why bother posting that since it is all for nothing. Human Self Extinction is the only option.

We can't even get an operating system that will survive the first ten minutes of being powered up before it gets infected. Hell, not even an os that has a life span of more than ten to twelve years.

It might have been interesting to see what the ancient Egyptian pharaohs would have stored in quartz discs though. Could ya just see the look on peoples faces when finding this in the pyramids? Could've been a real shot in the arm for Tom Cruise.

You want to use Atari TOS be my guest. The rest of us will move with the times.

lol

lol
hey, it wasn't my idea for stores to try selling Atari systems (at $50-$60) this last Christmas.

But, to explain:
The basic home telephone has lasted as long as it has because it's simple and the only real update it ever got was from pulse to tone dialing. It's one of those things that "just works" regardless of where ya got it or how much (or how little) ya paid for it. Life would be so much less frustrating for everyone all the way around if more things were like that. Contrary to popular belief, you can have that and still have up-date and modern.

We should fill them all with pRon spamming worms so when the next sentient life form arrives and is smart enough to decode them, they will know how we lived...

Nah...not self extinction, this is how it happens: Most all humans will be killed off by a catastrophic cosmic event. Some people will escape in space craft and go into suspended hibernation in a vain attempt to preserve the race. Of course the human hero's take along with some quartz crystals with re-animation instructions and an advanced playback system capable of universal translation. Of course it will take just about 400 million years to reach the next solar system and all the quartz will have grown into new structures before they arrive. In the absence of quartz backed instructions, the aliens who discover the humans won't know how to reverse the suspended animation. The aliens try in vain to revive the bodies and unfreeze the long dead humans. The resulting decomposition will then release virus's and germs that completely kill off the entire alien race, leaving only a mutated microbiology environment behind. The biological material evolves and becomes sentient, starting the cycle all over again.

In other words...all worlds are doomed.

Oh man i want to get me some of those data storing mp3s they have been making at the factory

Most cultural institutions and research laboratories still rely on magnetic tape to archive their collections. Hitachi recently announced that it has developed a medium that can outlast not only this old-school format but also CDs, DVDs, hard drives and MP3s.

Could be convienant for shooting messages off into space. Time and temperature won't affect them.

Here's an interesting short story about mans progress through the ages. It's by Issac Asimov. About 20 minutes long, but it might leave a lasting impression on you. The ending is intriguing, but won't make sense if you just skip to the end.

Truly interesting. I mean the golden discs that are currently traveling with the Voyager probes could last forever and ever thanks to the solid gold coating. But since Space is a vacuum , its far easier to preserve than with a Nitrogen/Oxygen based atmosphere.

SO THE INHABITANTS OF THE PLANET KRYPTON WERE ON THE RIGHT TRACK WITH KRYSTLE TECHNOLOGY !

We've tried the glass thing before ad it was a disaster.

Inevitable link to the science news cycle.
Without a link to the original research it is impossible to tell if the "and placed on a future Voyager mission" was scrubbed. Also there has been a lot of pointless effort on storing nuclear waste for >300M years that would tell you where you can store such things (pointless because the really nasty stuff is gone in roughly 1 year and the rest will likely be wanted before 2100).

BS on that number for sure. Makers of the CD said the disc could hold data for 100 years. Disc are being found that have disc rot on them in as little as 18 - 20 months (def. not the norm, but still, not near 100 years). Now the stats say CDs can last from 20 years to 100.

As far as this quarts stuff goes, why store something that long?! Like everything else, if it's worth keeping it gets "upgraded" and put on whatever the new media is that comes out.

Wow, I never thought it would actually happen but they are working on the cheap looking clear computer stuff from bad sci fi movies. Wow.

Why develop new mineral media when we've already had proven technology such as black basalt in 2001: A Space Odyssey for 45 years at best, or 12 years at worst?

I think Foundation by Asimov should be required reading, at least the first one.

They say it'll last 300 million years, but typical of most companies they will only warranty it for 100 million. Pfft.

A post from Cube without an F-bomb? Holy fuck...

My system hasn't gotten an infection in years and years. Perhaps you are doing something wrong?

That won't be a problem since it will be like the movie Dude Wheres my Car? I will repopulate the species with those Hot Chicks who wanted the Continuum Transfunctioner. :D

I was referring to the fact that most new computers come pre-infected out of the box. It's one of the many reason I prefer to build my own.

The biggest problems I end up with on any of my machines seems to be in dealing with a constantly growing need from everyone else to send me advertisements and force-feed tracking cookies. My filters do work but there is just soooo much of it. It almost makes me want a text only browser that's incapable of running any type of script at all. I just get tired of dealing with other peoples' crap.

What's to say that the secrets of the universe weren't already encoded into earth's quartz and we've been breaking it up and selling it as part of children's geology kits.
