I know this is going to come as a shock, but the people behind an online black market have ran off with $12 million in bitcoin. What kind of people would do something like that?

The Evolution Market, an online black market that sells everything contraband — from marijuana, heroin and ecstasy to stolen identities and malicious hacking services — appears to have vanished in the last 24 hours with little warning. Much to the chagrin of countless merchants hawking their wares in the underground market, the curators of the project have reportedly absconded with the community’s bitcoins — a stash that some Evolution merchants reckon is worth more than USD $12 million.

Wow there is a sucker born every second indeed, gratz to whoever pulled this off.

bitcoin was a neat idea ruined by stuff like this
its to closely tied to criminal activity for your avg person to use it
the current price is propped up by speculators
tulips all the way down

Pretty sure if $12M was in circulation that bitcoin clearly has value and isn't some fad or "neat idea". Cash is also closely tied to criminal activity, nobody saying the dollar is worth less when your dealer steals it all.

True, the permanent nature of transactions in conjunction with difficulty to track or I should specifically say track down to a person or entity... is what causes these types of things.

Very similar with cash but the internet makes it much worse.

So the very things companies complain about with things like credit cards/PP, chargebacks etc is the very thing that makes the current transaction system work on a large scale.

So what will happen (what is happening), is companies will pop up that will insure bitcoin transactions... creating basically the same fee system we have with credit cards today. Except one could do transactions for free (just like paypal gift basically).

Basically it comes down to the grass being greener on the other side... those evil visa companies collecting fees but insuring transactions from theft etc.

Guess what free gets you... stolen money if you are not careful... just like cash.

Bitcoins, the preferred magic money for the gullible and thieves...priceless!

The Internet wins again...

Wait for it.........
"Colombian drug cartel catches up with 4 computer nerds who made off with $12 million in Bitcion earlier this week. The 4 men were foolish enough to use stolen identities from the very Dark Web they ripped off. In true cartel fashion the 4 were brutally murdered in a very public and horrifying display to send a message to future wannabe criminals......"

I thought those Cartels are rolling in money. 12 mill is probably a pittance to them.

They've killed for much less.

Probably just for looking at them the wrong way.

I feel sorry for the people losing their money but it was bound to happen one day. The only way to safely story your BTC is an offline wallet.

you don't actually need wallet software.

all you need is the private key.

i agree though, offline is the way to go.

Not the smartest move to steal so much money from "that type" of people...just sayin. The world is not as big as you think it is now days.
