It looks as though that cybersecurity bill being voted on yesterday was defeated in the U.S. Senate by a vote of 51 - 47.

"It is disappointing that senators haven't yet been able to reach an agreement on cybersecurity legislation -- but stalemate doesn't make the issue go away," BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman said in a statement. "There is no getting around the fact that we need to bolster America's cybersecurity capabilities. We urge both parties to put this issue at the top of the agenda in the next Congress."

I would think this isn't as big of a deal as say: the economy, health care, social issues... etc. Stupid corporate interests.

The BSA:

Its principal activity is trying to stop copyright infringement of software produced by its members.

It is funded through membership dues based on member company's software revenues, and through settlements from companies it successfully brings action against. With many EULA customers agree to audits by software companies.[1]

This wasn't voted down, this was just the vote to decide whether or not it was time to stop arguing and modifying the bill and finally vote on the bill itself.

And given how often the fillabuster has been abused the past four years, its very likely the filabuster is getting changed to be less of a defensive tool at the start of the next Senate term. Meaning the bill would likely advance if introduced after January 20th.

The filibuster has been abused for far longer than 4 years. And quite frankly, this bill isn't even close to being ready to hit the floor, like much of the legislation over the past 16 years, and probably long before that as well. Most of these bills are half shod run through congress with very little research and cross examination time.

It seems to be more about copyright protection than CyberSecurity.

Look at the number of times its been used per year, on average, over the history of the Senate. The last four years has seen the use SKYROCKET. To the point where Dems are going to greatly weaken it so they can actually get things done.

Considering the considerable change in direction that is being prompted by the current president and his party, including the large number of initiatives and bills that they are trying to pass, and given the highly contentious nature and some very unpopular legislation they have already passed, it is not surprising. Also given the fact that a number of these bills also come with significant price tags with absolutely no proposal in balancing the budget or cutbacks or any plan at all to reduce the deficit, it becomes even more apparent why the number has increased.

But please, let's just look at a few pretty graphs and insist that obviously 'now' it is a problem and discount all the other considerably far more important problems we have, which is why it is being used so often. If you want a bipartisan congress, then you need bipartisan bills and you need to negotiate and offer common ground, something that the current president and his party have over and over again refused to do. Having secret meetings and creating bills without the other party then trying to slam them through congress before anyone can review them, is a measure for disaster. It is already exacting terrible consequences from the previous administration as well as this administration.

This is also the problem with this Cyber bill, it is poorly thought through, poorly worded, and will be even more poorly executed.

The fact that the BSA supports this bill is reason in and of itself to oppose it.

They are nothing but a bunch of jack-booted thugs who steal money from businesses who have legitimately purchased their software.

Gee i wonder why this shit keeps getting defeated perhaps because the legislation would get thrown out by the judicial branch for being unconstitutional or because the legislation is shady and borderline illegal.

Cyber security is fine as long as it does not infringe on my rights or privacy

Cyber is a really silly sounding and looking word and it usually has something to do with perverted text.

The bill sounds like a joke rapped up in shit.

I already planned to cope for 4 bad years, with the 2 candidates that had huge chances of winning. So..... time to try to start coping.
