Cyberpunk 2077 Won't Be an Epic Games Store Exclusive

CD Projekt Red has reassured fans that Cyberpunk 2077 will not be an Epic Games Store exclusive. A fan brought the possibility up on a recent Twitter exchange, to which they replied: “Yeaaaaaaaaah…. Pass on that.” The much-anticipated first-person sci-fi RPG is being worked on by over 400 people, almost double that of The Witcher 3.

This will no doubt be a welcome message to many gamers. However, the odds of CD Projekt Red actually making the game exclusive to the Epic Games Store were astronomically low. CD Projekt has its own online store and platform; GOG. As such, it would be extremely bizarre for them to release a game on another company’s platform and not on their own. Of course, it’s fair to note that CD Projekt Red made no statements about potential exclusivity to their own platform.

Thank God. You know Epic tried though.

Would've been an automatic pass on this game even though I've been looking forward to it.

I think CD Projeckt Red knows better.

That said, I have no problem if they want to release on Epic store ALSO.

Well, yeah. Why would CDP make their game exclusive to a competing platform when they own GOG? Wouldn't be surprised if it shows up on Epic's store some day but it would be stupid of them to make it exclusive to that platform.

Same reason Ubisoft agreed not to sell Division 2 on Steam in exchange for a big envelope of Fortnite cash.

Obviously Epic is aware of GOG, so they likely pitched CDPR "sell Cyberpunk on GOG, fine, but just don't sell it on Steam". And CDPR told them to pound sand because they actually understand math.

Ashamed to admit for this one Id probably breakdown and buy it on epic if I had to. Thankfully they understand economics.

I'd like to see games sold on every platform but at a set price + whatever the store's cut is. Might make things interesting.

ugh. I hope it's not on just on GOG. I'm losing count of all these stores I have to have installed now.

I wouldn't mind it being exclusive to GoG. DRM free needs support.

They tried it with thronebreaker and quickly backed off. The reality is that while GOG has a large audience, it is, like all other services, a small fraction of the user base of Steam. If you want a successful PC launch, you pretty much have to have availability on steam.

If CDPR was inclined to make their games exclusive to any store, it would be GOG (also known as CD Projekt Blue), not someone else's store. In any case they don't roll like that. They don't believe in restricting users. Sure they get 100% of the profit if you buy their games on GOG, but you're welcome to buy their games on Steam and anywhere else they may be offered, if you so choose.

GOG doesn't require you to use their Galaxy client. You can just grab the installer for each individual game in your library, install the games on their own, and run the games on your PC like we used to do back in the days before shit like Steam. With GOG you get all the files you need for installing the game, and you can run these games without signing into anything or having an Internet connection. You can store the offline installers wherever you want and make true backups. It's like pirating a game and having everything on your local storage, except here you actually paid money for the product. Remember, GOG is 100% DRM-free, which means it doesn't require you to have anything extra. If you want just the game and the game alone, that's fine. Galaxy only offers extra shit, like cloud saves, keeping games updated automatically (which you can turn off), and a bunch more shit you often find with other clients (friends list, chat, achievements, screenshots, in-game overlay, online matchmaking, etc). If you don't want to use any of that stuff, you don't have to. Again, GOG Galaxy is 100% optional. You are not required to use it. When you buy a game on GOG, you get the game itself, and that's it. You don't ever have to fuck with Galaxy if you so choose.

The only problem with GoG is some publishers don't patch their game on GoG or do it very infrequent.

Glad to hear it. Really looking forward to this. I'll be a little bummed if it's exclusive to GOG but that wouldn't stop me from buying from them. At least it's not like half baked service that Epic is.

FYI, you don't need to install their client in order to play the game.
I always forget they even HAVE a client... a relatively new thing, but only for those who want it...

as for me, at this point I don't really care which store sells a game... I'd rather buy it directly from the devs and not get any publisher or store-front involved ever so 100% of the money goes to the ones who actually made the game... hey I'm a dreamer so what...

Epic store exclusive? for CDPR that's never going to happen when they already have GOG. and GoG will be the best place to get the game. to be honest i don't even see the issue if they make the game exclusive to their own store only and people doesn't have any excuse why they can buy the game at GoG if the game did end up being GoG exclusive.
