    Half-Life 3 confirmed?

    https://www.pcgamesn.com/cyberpunk-2077/cyberpunk-2077-half-life-3

When V heads to the ripperdoc to pick up some new upgrades, Victor is watching a televised fight at his desk. In the background, there are a couple of posters. One of them features a person in an HEV-esque suit, under the title “No Life 3.”

I see this game and it reminds me of the early days, when content was king of income streams. Games were released when they were ready, and not when a Publisher said it had to be out the door. This game is made by people who love games
Half-Life 3 is never coming out, and if it does, it won't be by Valve.

That moment, when you are so fucking rich and successful, you can't be bothered to put out a game that will make you even more rich and successful

This game will look amazing with ray tracing. I also wonder if it’s like The Witcher 3 where it looks more impressive as you advance in the game. The initial area in TW3 wasn’t too visually stunning but deeper into the game it was amazing.

They do put Bestheda to shame. I think TW series ruined other games for me lol. My expectations are too high.

Bethesda-TES for sure. Skyrim or TW3- I know which I'd pick.

I enjoyed Fallout 3 and Skyrim in their day, but still felt the engine was dated and the story lacking. All the Witcher games were fun for me, but W3 was a homerun on so many levels for me, it is difficult not to have ridiculous expectations for Cyberpunk. I think CDPR likes to blow people's expectations away though, they like setting a new bar for the whole of the industry to have to try to rise too. I don't think it's malicious, I think they just know they can break the mold and they are driven too make the best games ever. The resulting affect on the industry is just icing on the cake. If this game does any where near as well as W3, they may (we can only hope) break the back of the "SP isn't profitable" bullshit that is being pushed by the 'games as a service's crowd, and put credible single player games back in the spotlight.

So I just watched the long gamemplay trailer. Anyone else underwhelmed?

As usual CDPR puts tons of effort into these things. That's not the problem.

I feel like I have an identity crisis here.. Coming from Deus Ex land.

With regards to combat specifically, too many cheesy mechanics and 'helpful' guides. Sorry, but auto-tracking bullets or bullets that go through walls is completely boring.

Only time will tell with any pre-release footage. I'm rarely a "guns blazing" kind of guy (for example), I prefer to stay quiet and sneak. Supposedly you can do that in this game, but since this is the first and only gameplay they've shown us, I haven't seen an example of that yet. Doesn't mean it isn't in there. The smart gun was "advanced', "late game" material, that is completely optional to use.

I'll just wait and see what comes, it is still way too early to be drawing conclusions imo.

    Also, this made me lol:

Disclaimer: before any raging, there are several games represented that I am also looking forward too. Still dam funny.

So... Fight your way then. The whole point of this game is being dropped into this city, and playing how you want. They give you tools. You can choose to use them or not.

I don't think you can read too much into the weapons that were shown in the demo. no doubt they will have limits in the way ammo is burned or such. the environments also have shown to be destructible, so there may be limitations in the types of walls that can be penetrated, just the piercing mode is more efficient about it.

Yea I suppose they we're trying to just demo as much as possible. But like, who needs a skillshot indicator for throwing a grenade? Lol hope you can turn that kinda shit off.

I'll agree with that point. :D Hopefully there are plenty of HUD options. Who knows though. I have to think that once augmented visual systems are real, there will be all kinds of useless information on them. :D

Yeah I was thinking about that. Weapons of the future will be so smart as displayed in this game, it'll take the skill out of using them. Interesting to contemplate how that will affect gameplay lol

This isn't an FPS game. It's an RPG with FPS combat. But combat is determined by die rolls and your character sheet and of course your equipment (with all the various modifiers). Hence the damage points that come off the characters when bullet hits are registered.
You can choose what you want to do from a combat perspective. But I have a sneaking suspicion that full stealth or diplomatic gameplay will be possible. Of course people wanted to see the action in this game, I think however that's a really small cross-section of what the game will be and will be about. Especially when considering how large the world is and the things to do.
Anyway I said all that to say that I'm not certain how important skill at FPS' is going to be. I think it's ego boosting to be a twitch booster coming into a game like this, however I think the game will have quite a few more considerations to allow you to play the roll you want (that is to say if you want to feel like a combat badass, let you feel like a combat badass even if you're not a good gamer). Or be a smooth talking corpo (raise those intelligence and cool modifiers) even if you aren't particularly any of those things in real life.

In a lot of ways, I hope it is that way. Because I don't think this game is necessarily for twitch gamers. There are plenty of games there to scratch that itch. But not necessarily a lot of deep RPGs in this kind of world that allow you to define character or feel a particular way. Of course I'm playing devils advocate to a certain degree. We don't have enough information to really judge fully how the gameplay will be. Especially considering we saw an early game encounter with tons of late game mechanics and not enough of the decisions and decision points as well as skill system to know the various directions they could go (we barely saw usage of the engineering skill as an example. We saw zero tech-runner skills, no stealth mechanics (except for maybe the first kill at the beginning of the demo), no understanding how cool or intelligence manipulate conversation or how the rep system works.
Who knows, maybe you can make a character that does killer combat with mantis blades only for stealth or otherwise blows peoples heads up like Scanners using netrunner abilities. Or hack people to kill each other. Point being there are far more crazy ways combats could evolve into that take "even less skill" that might be viable in game if that's your major decision point.

So, all that to say we don't know a lot of things. We don't even know a lot of things about the gun mechanics. I mean, even registered damage was laughable. I've payed close attention to this and also Doom Eternal as another example. The player probably gets hit dozens of times during an encounter and maybe takes 1-5 damage a shot, in the case of this game also she has regenerative health. Basically the character can't die. I realize that was for the purpose of the demo in order for them to show off the game. But my point in explaining all this is we don't know if going in guns blazing is really viable, or if you get shot once you go down like a sack of potatoes (or of course the third variable of how much gear and mods will allow you to make that sort of combat choice). So while this definitely gives us flavor and vibe and to a certain degree gameplay, it's just not as clear how all this stuff is going to play out. If it wasn't for CDPR's history I would say it's just as unreasonable to be hyped as it is to be skeptical.
    Hopefully that trust isn't misplaced.

I'm hoping you've nailed it here. After watching the little bit of combat we've seen so far, this is the only thing that makes a sense to me. I'm fine with that although I'd really have preferred an action/aiming game over this seemingly truer RPG combat. If they can come up with a smooth working hybrid, all the better but I can't think of something along those lines that I've liked before. Not meaning that couldn't be done, but I just don't know of a good example.

I'd like to see how they handle the XP and leveling system. So while you can possibly do everything in stealth mode or diplomacy in many games you lose out on XP if you take that route the versus killing everything.

Some of that has been talked about. There are multiple types of experience in game. Reputation as an example can only be modified by cool, your clothing, and of course your interactions with others. You could kill every character in the game and never increase your cool or reputation. In other words I think the tracks are entirely different. The types of experience in game are only for doing those things. What that will mean in terms of execution and balance we don't have a handle on yet. Obviously they're expecting most people to be hybrid and do some amount of combat, some level of diplomatic, etc.

I'll agree that diplomatic is often not done well in games. Here's hoping for a change.

Very well said and now I understand. It's more akin to fallout than Deus ex. Pity imo since ive played the shit out of dx and never touched a fallout game lol something about dice rolls on a shot I know was aimed well (beyond bullet scatter) just grinds my gears. Probably Morrowind and hitting someone with my bow and having it 'miss' lol

Im sure it'll still be a game to play and will be very enjoyable, but damn I was really hoping for Deus Ex ><

That's my spin, but truth be told, I don't know either. Clearly damage is RPG based, but it doesn't look like targeting is. However as you noted there are plenty of things to assist your "bad-assery" should you still want to play that line.
It is yet to be seen how much your ability to play FPS' will matter versus your character build and the balance in-between. Maybe if you do want to do a combat game it will be necessary, maybe it won't.
48 minutes of game play feel unprecedented in any game, let alone of this type. However if anything can be picked apart it is that they showed us a lot and yet they showed us nothing at all. Because as we're discussing here now, the context of those things matters just as much as the things themselves.

It'll probably be like an advanced version of something like Borderlands. FPS targeting, with damage, perks, etc. applied to the hits. Just a guess on my part too, but seems logical.

When asked about hardware limitations, Pietras responded “Oh no, actually from the top we knew we were developing the game for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. And we started the process of optimization right at the start. So that’s probably what you see running the demo is a PC with like an i7 and 1080TI, so it’s not astronomical specs."

He added, “Basically, because we are thinking from scratch about optimization, how streaming works, how to introduce global illumination for instance without overwhelming the PC or the GPU. Now we take those things into account right at the start and optimize for that.”

It's based on Geralt of Rivia from the book series. It was never meant to be like Skyrim where you make your character outside of some skill trees.

Yeah. That didn't sit well with me for an RPG. I don't want to play a pre-made character with a pre-determined story. I just want to level, select attributes and skills, get gear, and wreck stuff.

I know there’s at least a mod where it changes his model to be Ciri’s. But that’s all it does... still sounds like Geralt lol.

The character has voice acting and the story is very linked to him the way he is.

That doesn't leave you with many options. Most RPG's have pre-determined story lines. Although, The Witcher has multiple endings, like with many other RPG games too.

Sounds like you'd be better off playing World of Warcaft.

In that case, I say just let that go, and approach it as a new experience. Maybe you'll like it. If there's a game like this that you're likely to enjoy even though it's not really your usual style, it's probably this one.

Personally, I'm split right down the middle on this. I really enjoy games with developed characters, stories, and a somewhat fixed progression, and then I equally enjoy games where I slip into the main role myself, and the game unfolds based on that. (usually open world for the latter)

IMO it's silly to be rigid on something like that, because you'll miss out on a lot of good games. Let the actual game determine whether you like it or not, rather than just the finer points and genre cues. Sure, if you absolutely hate RTSes for example, then sure, there's probably not going to be one that makes you all of a sudden like them.

However as a different example, if you like RPGs in general, but have reservations about the character in one that you think you'd otherwise like, play it anyway!
