Studio MDHR has announced that the indie smash hit Cuphead has sold over 3 million copies. To celebrate the triple platinum sales milestone, Cuphead now has a 20% discount on Steam and XBOX. I enjoy playing the game, but I must warn you that it is a hard and unforgiving platformer as evidenced in this charity speed-runner stream.

Hello friends! We're barely past the halfway mark of 2018, and are humbled to announce that Cuphead has already reached over 3 million copies sold! It's hard for us to express just how appreciative we are to everyone who has played and enjoyed our niche little run & gun game with the wacky rubber-hose characters.

It's just too fucking hard! I'm an old fart. Not a fan of games that progress in difficulty like this one. Wish there was an easy mode to just go through the cool levels.

This game is amazing to listen to and look at.

Looks like a looney toones cartoon from the thirties. It looks cool, but I'd never play something like this.

It IS a good game with fantastic hand drawn on paper animation, they did a metric shitton of work for this game. They deserve every ounce of publicity and fame they can get and everybody should try it atleast once. But that said, I never finished it. I pretty much had a nervous breakdown after the second world, the game was just so... damn... hard... I should get back to it again although I fear I would have to start from scratch. During the two days I binge-gamed it the game trained my reflexed and hand-eye coordination back into the NES-levels where they were when I was a kid, buuut after such a long break I fear they have dropped back into the old lazy RPG fart levels.

    That is pretty amazing.

I didn't realize anyone played platformers anymore.

The game is a masterpiece, but hard as nails. It's crazy thinking how much work went into hand drawing the frames on an indie game budget.

From what I have played so far, there are couple of bosses where I felt you can get RNG screwed but otherwise it is simply oldschool hard, you can beat it with solid platformer and bullethell skills. Think of it as 2D Dark Souls.

I loved this game and played the hell out of it for the first month of its release. Managed to get all S ranks on the first island, half of them on the second island, and the rest are all A, A-, or A+. I did get an S rank on King Dice though since there was a specific achievement for that. Kinda stopped once I got all the achievements and realized there was none for getting all S ranks.

    Can't wait for the DLC!

If you've played games from the Nintendo/Super Nintendo era, this game is just a boss-o-thon. There's not many stages to go around. For me it took 2 days to finish the game. So it's fair hard, as there's always a better way to do things in the game. Here's a hint, get the dash ability that makes you invincible when you dash.

I got distracted shortly after its release. I had played through a handful of levels (first island, part of next) and beat a few bosses. It is a bit on the ridiculously difficult side, and I've been playing a lot of difficult games over the last couple of years. It's harder than Dead Cells, it's harder than Hyper Light Drifter. I really like it, but I found it somewhat less rewarding for the difficulty than some other hard games I've played lately. Not sure if I'll finish it at some point or not. It's pretty amazing though from a technical and artistic standpoint. I'm sure if I put a bit more time into it I could finish it. I've just been sucked into other games for a while.

It's a great game, you die a lot but you jump back in right away with no consequences. I think anyone can get pretty far if they are patient and learn the patterns.

Yeah, eventually you get it after a zillion tries. I really love the game but it's just too fucking hard for an old fart like me. I thought I heard something about an expansion pack with lower difficultly settings coming out next year.

I prefer them. For example I hate the 3D Mario games.

    I'm old school.

Game is a work of art, they deserve every penny they get. I hope more companies realize you can develop games for pc and still make money if the game isn't crap.

3D Mario & Zelda games have nothing on the originals, that is for sure, but I don't think I've played a platformer since I lost interest in my NES in 1991.

Personally I only play first person titles, and one turn based game (Civ series). While I don't, others also enjoy 3rd person titles. I just wouldn't have expected platformers in 2018 to be much more than a throwback novelty.

There is actually quite a large market and following for 2D games these days. They're all made by independent studios, but there are a lot of them out there, and a lot of good ones too. The level of quality with many of them is off the charts. Most of them will take the 2D, hand-drawn, pixel art approach, but then push it beyond anything that any of the old consoles/computers would be able to do. New effects, more animation, larger worlds, larger enemies, countless weapon types, etc. etc.

Here's a short list of my favorites that you might want to check out if you're curious:

    Dead Cells
    Sundered
    Axiom Verge
    Hyper Light Drifter
    Songbringer
    Wizard of Legend
    Cuphead (obviously)
    Aggelos
    Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

It has a easy mod. I don't normally play hard games but I found medium fair. You do need good motor control
    Add to the
    Ori and the blind forest
    Owlboy
    Bastion
    Braid
    Cave Story
    Swappers
    Hotline Miami
    A Hat in Time

I've got more that could go on that list too that are top quality. FEZ comes to mind for one. I was just trying to not be overwhelming. :D

I don't think a list of good indie games can be too long, they need the exposure.
I wanted to put one more but I couldn't remember what it was. It was an old adventure island style RPG with spells that was recently remastered.

I must be the only person who has zero interest in this game. It get it's a twist on old cartoons etc... but I won't be playing it until it's free on PS+ or something.

    In that case:

    https://hardforum.com/threads/good-2d-pc-game-database.1943046/#post-1043200065

It needs updating, but I’m hoping to do that soon.

The game youre probably thinking of is Dragon’s Curse.

Aggelos is another one just like that. Wonderboy inspired. I had an absolute blast playing it. Definitely recommended.

I'm incorrect that I don't care about it, or that I will only play it if it's free? Sorry been a long week and the brain isn't firing on all threads.

Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap - it seems that Dragon’s Curse is another name for it?
Aggelos looks interesting. I wish Zelda had some competition. Oceanhorn didn't come close

It’s not Zelda for sure, but if you haven’t played Hyper Light Drifter, it’s absolutely incredible, and mostly scratches that 2D Zelda itch. It’s heavier on the combat, but is definitely a nice atmospheric overhead adventure.

Platformers aren't my thing, but games like Cuphead and Ori are just gorgeous to look at. I've spent some hours just watching gameplay of these games on YouTube.

I played it for a while when it came out. Decent game, fun combat but light on story and environments aren't very interesting (everywhere looks similar).
