Crucial BX100 250gb SSD $80 'Egg Shell Shocker

I think this Shell Shocker is fine if you want a decent size drive for a good price that draws little power. But with Newegg you have to accept the possibility that it's actually a refurb or used model sold as new. I have seen this happen twice with Newegg.
Personally I'm sticking with Amazon for my SSD needs, and just paying more dollar per gigabyte.

what exactly is a refurbished SSD...that scares me.

I suspect either the controller or one of the memory banks failed.

I actually have more faith in manufacturer-refurbished or "recertified" hardware since it actually gets tested before being (re)sold. For "new" items, the manufacturer may only test a representative sample. If one of a batch works, they should all work ... right???

On the other hand, I am quite leery of "Open Box" items from retailers and e-tailers. I'm pretty sure that Newegg's Returns Department isn't breaking out the soldering iron to replace bad caps on a motherboard before re-selling it as "Open Box".
