Overpriced pos. Creative hater here!

I sold all of my soundcards. Got a USB to digital converter and a Yamaha 363 receiver for the same price as that stupid hunk of junk. No more driver issues b/c I DON'T HAVE any lol. Simply streams the sound of COD4 w/ no bullshat. Sound is way better now thanks.

Now, if it was $100 I would have a different opinion. $300? lol

it adds Dolby Digital Live. That's pretty cool, I wish I could have this with my X-Fi.

What's that, an "EMI shield"? Give me a fuckin' break.

Creative Labs is as annoying as ever. It'll never change.

Creative have always been known for decent hardware. But my concern has never been the hardware, it has been with the Software drivers with creative. Creative driver support just flat out sucks!

First full X-FI on PCI-E, if it wasnt so expensive I'd be interested in one.

What, you're tired about hearing his "awesome USB solution" in every single thread!?! Or are you tired of his stubborn hatred for Creative? I just don't think an audio thread at [H] is complete without spaceman's useless posts.

I wonder how this sounds compared to the PCI-E card that came with my MSI P7N mobo... Even though there's probably not much improvement, for $150 I'm so tempted to order it...

Thats the idea, he wants you to run out and buy that usb device hes using. Think him as a telemarketer or a door salesman ;)
heh nope. Just want people to know there are alternatives to cussing about the damn crackling, bsods etc. I go for bang/buck stuff mostly. Be cool if I could get free stuff out of it.

Truly, the usb route is now the best I have used. It was not that way until about 1 1/2 years back when EAX started to become irrelevant.

Please do not be mean to me. I am actually a really nice guy that loves puppies and napalm.

... or puppies that bark and shoot napalm out of their mouths <.< >.> <.<

Anyway I would kinda understand the EMI shielding, if it worked. I have a wireless PCI card that is positioned as far away from my X-Fi as possible yet I still hear it chattering away.

From what I've read, the idea of an EMI shield is a good one, but in practice it doesn't seem to work so well.

Personally? I wouldn't buy this new card. Creative insists on the stupid flexijack (that's a pet peeve of mine), especially in what's supposed to be a high end looks to be a "prosumer" card. Not reading anything on the Creative site about better opamps, etc. ... looks to me like they finally got it together to make a PCI-E card, slapped the fatal1ty name on it and are going to, once preorders are filled, jack the price to make more money.

Plus, after the last X-Fi driver update that fubar'ed my system (using XP mind you) and just in general, I try to never say never, but hopefully I'll never have to deal with another creative card again. I highly doubt that something that big is going to change in the company. Namely that they're going to release solid, working drivers AND the console panel for d/l for people who've lost/broken their installation CD. I just don't trust them and have had too many problems to be excited about this.

I have a Claro+ sitting waiting til Tuesday to be installed

If it worked, Creative would try to back it up with hard data. So would Asus and Razer. None of them do.

It's easy enough to test and reproduce. This is SNR with; this without. Easy, ain't it?

It's fairly safe to assume that these so-called 'shields' serve absolutely no purpose but to entrap heat and shorten component lifetime (though I'd welcome anyone who'd debate me about it). This is just some bizarre, meaningless fad.

LooooL

They said in the past that going to PCIe made absolutely no difference to the sound, so what changed now ?

Ya $300 is a way to much for a soundcard.

Just like how there are people willing to pay top-dollar for the latest and greatest processors, there are those who are willing to pay top-dollar for the latest and (not) greatest (, really, but as good as we can get) sound cards. Besides, this one is going for $150.

Curious, though. Why can't we preorder the X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series? It comes with a matching front panel, but it has been rendered useless.

On past cards, the card itself had analog in and out (with the exception of a digital mini-TRS). ALL of the digital connectors (coax 1x in / 1x out, optical 1x in / 1x out) and other goodies were on the front panel, which was required to enable the card's decoding functions. Looks like they did away with coaxial connectors (bummer), and limited it to 2x optical, but directly on the card itself (1x in 1x out).

The exception to this were the super-duper-high-end X-Fi Elite and Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro, which came with an external I/O module instead of the front-panel connector. There doesn't seem to be any external version of this card, so it looks like the X-Fi Elite will remain as their high-end card for now.

From what I've read, the idea of an EMI shield is a good one, but in practice it doesn't seem to work so well.
snip
Can't say much about this particular shielding, but many people have reported great success by manually shielding their cards (through various methods, though ERS paper is nice and simple; courtesy of cotdt at Head-Fi). So, it's nice to see Creative actually trying in this regard.

Edit: I also have to agree with your sentiment of not wanting to buy Creative. I have a HT Omega card and I was extremely happy with their support when I had some trouble. My only problem: no one except Creative has cards that decode DTS or AC3 over S/PDIF. As such, I am forced to get one for my HTPC.

Nvidia Mobo?
Find me a soundcard that delivers EAX 5.0 and the same preformance or pipe it with your "replacment" downgrade, thx.

Not proberly, it IS lower, as it runs on the CPU...not applicable..neeext!

Don't post cards that are downgrades, post alernatives..if none found, don't talk like their are "alternatives", when infact they are downgrades.

The best sounding games uses EAX/OpenAL...face it.

EDIT:
Not sure where the emulate EAX5 comes from(???):

I like the taken out of context. Full quote:

The introduction of ASUS' DS3D GX technology to open up EAX in all games to Windows Vista users is a hugely welcome one, and it appears to work reasonably well from our testing with a handful of titles. Their 'works with everything' approach is certainly far better than Creative Labs' application specific ALchemy solution when it comes to ease of use, and seems to do the job nicely. Of course, the big disadvantage of the D2X offer X-Fi based offerings is the loss of EAX Advanced HD effects, but again this might not be a big deal dependant on your personal tastes, with the ability to enjoy games in Dolby Digital or DTS possibly taking precedence over EAX-based environmental audio.
It is funny that all I ever hear is that x-fi has "EAX 5.0". How many games actually support it? It seems that even CL does not want anyone to know how many games support "EAX 5.0", as their website: http://www.soundblaster.com/technology/welcome.asp?j1=eax&j2=gamelist only lists EAX compatible, not EAX vx.xx compatible.

I really like the idea of DDL and/or DTS enabled games, as it is not HW (CL) specific. Read: universal standard. Instead of CL competing on proprietary gimmicks, let's make them compete on overall sound quality and ... maybe even drivers.

Dolby sucks for gaming compared to EAX
very true. i have a razer ac-1 and an x-fi in my pc. dolby headphone does work and goes a long way toward livening up the eax2, 6 year old sensaura 3d sound all non creative cards have. but it still uses eax2 (sigh)
however its pitiful compared to an x-fi. the newer the game the bigger the difference. dolby headphone has a small 3d field and no elevation effets. pretty comparable to a sb live 3d-sound-wise. not as good as an audigy- which has more distinct 3d sounds (but not good elevation effects like the x-fi)

i love my x-fi. but i agree that no competing standard or lack of an open standard might screw us all on 3d sound if creative labs goes under. dolby should get in bed with a sound card maker and say 'screw eax'/openal , and then develop their own 3d sound for gaming api. get some big fps game on board and compete with creative labs.

Well, Auzentech has a far better support than Creative and it is a much nicer card... You don't have to get so defensive on it.

Define "nicer"...I hate when undefined is being used as an argument...
Let's see, better components, has better analog out, opamps that are replaceable and you don't need a breakout box for optical. Creative seemed to have finally fixed the optical out part this time around. Plus, you actually get drivers that work and they update them regularly adding new features to the card. Creative does not do this and then tells someone who does to stop posting modded drivers that enable features on their cards.

So this is meassureable how?
If you say "richer" sound I am going to go ROFL.
As for modded drivers (i assume you are talking about the Dolby Crap?) I fail to se the relevance?

The X-Fi's are gamer cards and dolby sucks for gaming...this should be not secret.
