On the package it say turbo boost up to 3.5 Ghz, with "normal" operation of 2.5Ghz.

When I run Prime95 on it, the cores are only bumped up to 3.08 Ghz. I never see 3.5Ghz at all.

I guess my question is if this CPU is faulty since it does not "Turbo" to the supposed 3.5 Ghz at all. The CPU temp never reaches over 76C.

It's an ASUS G751JM laptop if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

Intel Turbo Boost is limited by heat as well as power consumption. For a 4710HQ, the multiplier and total MHz will automatically be reduced if long term power consumption exceeds 47 Watts. That is the problem you are seeing when running Prime 95. Most Intel mobile CPUs are limited like this. Only the Extreme CPUs can be adjusted beyond the 47 Watt limit.

The maximum multiplier is only available when a singe core of your CPU is active. When more cores become active, the multiplier will decrease. If you want to see your maximum multiplier, turn off CPU-Z, Intel XTU and all of your other monitoring apps. XTU is so bloated that it tends to keep one core active just monitoring your CPU.

Try running the RealTemp - XS Bench test. It is a very simple single threaded test. Watch the multiplier displayed by RealTemp. If you do not have a lot of background junk running on your computer, you should be able to get very close to the maximum multiplier during this test.

As you can see, some monitoring apps have a hard time reporting the maximum multiplier.

That is the best first reply I have ever gotten to one of my threads. Thank you!

I still don't see 3.5Ghz, but 3.35 Ghz was possible (score: 1400).

Thanks for making such a simple yet very effective program.

The maximum multiplier is only available when a single core is active. You are not seeing the maximum multiplier because your CPU is spending too much time processing various background tasks.

Windows is surprisingly efficient. It's all the other programs that people add to their computer that can slow things down. If you want your CPU to run faster, use the RealTemp Load percentage to track down and get rid of inefficient programs. On a lean system, a reading as low as 0.2% is possible.
