Core i3, Win 7 64 Bit, 16 Gb Ram, Samsung EVO SSD, Yet desktop refresh is slow

I had to work on a laptop loaded up with Norton's the other day. Norton A/V was hogging the hard disk so badly, with it literally thrashing it's guts out, that what should have taken me five hours tops took nine hours.

I was ready to kick the bastard out the door, especially considering it had the apparently unresolvable and quite common 'not enough memory' error when opening only one file under Microsoft Office....
 
I would try uninstalling the nV drivers and use the Microsoft ones, or, as ManOfGod suggested, run off the integrated GPU.

Finally - have you installed any sort of 'codec pack'? These are usually no longer required for anything and can cause various problems.
