Imagine how much money they could have saved filming the Matrix with this set-up. Watching the ball drop into the water was cool as hell.

Sort of... The difference being that with the technique used in the Matrix, they could freeze time and then rotate around things during that moment in time, or even move time backward and/or forward while changing the direction of the camera angle arbitrarily at the same time.

The setup is pretty much the same principle but having one camera rotating around instead of multiple cameras you are constraining you movement to the same speed as time.
multiple camarses you can have movement and time behave diffrently
