I'm thinking i'll need some sort of IR - USB receiver that's plugged into my pc and can learn TV remote's signals and a software which i can customize to do some simple keyboard shortcuts. I want to be able to shut down my PC along with the TV (1 or 2 button presses) and have control over basic functions of a video player (eg PotPlayer), such as skip, pause/play, volume up/down and maybe some rudimentary 4-way mouse control.

Can anyone help me?

If you can find something that is just a USB plug-in then I'm interested as well. The only things I've seen involve swapping out a drive bay which I don't have available.

I haven't really applied it, just dabbled with it. Check that out. It may do some of what you're looking for.

But you'll more than likely need to use a universal remote, like a Harmony to really make it work smoothly.

I'll look into it, but i want to avoid buying an universal remote, i would like to use my existing TV remote if possible.

I just ordered one of these..

Just make sure your TV has CEC capability. Everyone calls it something different. Sharp calls it Aquos Link, Samsung calls it AnyNet..
My Sony tv has CEC, but that thing works only with programs that have libCEC support and most of them are media center software packages, like XBMC, which i don't use.

Have you looked at Logitech's Harmony remotes which combines nicely with this IR reciever?
As a final solution, yes. But for now i would like something simple for my regular TV remote.

There is a much simpler solution and its very affordable.

Check out FLIRC.

It essentially turns ANY IR remote into a keyboard HID (as far as the computer is concerned). So it's completley plug and play and works with everything from PC/Mac/Linux/Android/Raspi. Anything with keyboard drivers.

It comes with software to allow you to set the dongle to program mode which lets you map buttons to keyboard keys.

The video on the website is of course simplified, you can record any keys:

I just use a Logitech K400. I have a Logitech Harmony remote which I use to turn everything on, volume, inputs, etc. but I wasn't sure it would be worth the effort to do all this.

Wow, thank you, it's exactly what i was looking for. And at a decent price, too. :D

if your computer still has a serial port, and you have a DIY inclination, you can make a serial port IR receiver with just a few parts. schematics are around.
