Controller for Android games

I have a Note 3 and I want to get a compact controller that works with it to play emulators and other stuff. Is there a good controller out there that will work with emulators (specifically ePSXe. I know there are the official Samsung ones, but idk if they are that great. Plus they're a little pricey @ $50+.

The Playstation DS4 or DS3 is my favorite choice.

Do I have to have my phone rooted to use them? Is that all I need is just the controller? Or is there a app I need too?

I think the cable you need to called an OTG cable.
A mini usb to female usb.

Tested this with a DS3 this weekend and was surprised how good it worked.

I use the MOGA Pro. Cost me $38, but has a remappable driver that works with many hundreds of games, including every emulator I have thrown at it! Like you, I use a Note 3, and it has a clip to hold your phone in place, so it really feels like a portable game system!
