Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind sucks on Xbox. Its MUCH better on PC.

FFVII/VIII, Grandia were two that were just not the same on the PC. To name some that were console only, and were awesome, here's a short list.

FFI-X, all Star Oceans, Xenogears, Front Mission 2/3, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Legia, the entire Legend of Zelda series, Earthbound etc, etc, etc. RPGs will never be the same on PCs as consoles. You can't really deny that, the console arena has always been the favourite of RPGs. I'm done with arguing with you. Too far off topic for my tastes, and pointless.

what the hell is wrong with RPG's on the PC?

FF7 / 8 were released on the PC and were perfectly playable. the only problem was they only supported 3dfx Glide for hardware rendering. the controls and the games themselves worked fine, and if you are a gamepad fan then there are plenty of gamepads or joysticks for the PC. this idea that somehow being released on a console magically makes an RPG worth playing is absurd. WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE? and we're not talking about economics here, simply quality.

KOTOR is another brilliant example of a console RPG working just fine on the PC (in fact looking far better than it does on a console if you have good PC hardware).

I much prefer playing games on a PC. With a good system the graphics are often going to be much better, but I prefer it because you just have a lot more flexibility with the controls. Pointing and clicking on a character in your party is much easier than using say an Xbox controller.

All platforms have great games on them. To say "I wont play games on console because...."

or "I wont play games on PC because..."

is basically denying yourself access to some great games. Just soak up the gaming fun on all platforms and enjoy.

I love both PC and console gaming. I mostly support PC gaming because I came to a point where I had to choose between the two for economical reasons and I went with PC. Consoles are great, but they aren't upgradable. Not to mention that I'm hardcore about FPS games. Give me my mouse or give me death!

Exactly ;)

It's somewhat narrowminded to limit yourself to one platform unless you're desperately short on money and can only afford to maintain a healthy game collection for one system. This is especially true for RPGs because the console and the PC have completely different types of gameplay, some of which will attract different people. Such things should never become more than one person's unique opinion.

I agree, and also if you are a big sports gamer, then definately go with the console.

I would have to agree with the RPG on console crowd. Don't get me wrong, I love my pc rpg's, but the sheer amount of console rpgs and the quality of them are great. Not to mention the amount of platformers on consoles. My PS2 gets more play than my xbox, but my pc gets more play than my PS2. That's really only because my kids are usually watching their cartoons on the tv and it would be an act of aggression for me to fire up a console to play some quick rounds of Guilty Gear to interrupt Totally Spies. On the PC, I can quickly fire up a game, play some quick rounds of Frag Ops or the DoW demo and I have my fix, where with the console, I usually spend hours playing one game.

I love my PS2. Don't get me wrong there are a few games that I play on the PC, like the whole dungeon crawler types of games, but in terms of RPG, I like to play it on the PS2. I do play a lot of PSX games on my PC so that I get better graphics, like Vagrant Story and such, so I dunno if that is consider console or PC gaming.

this coming from someone whos NEVER OWNED a console and everytime we play anything on mine i kick his ass and he gets pissed..lol

Both PC and console are good, but some games are better only one of them. Such as CS for xbox sucks but CS for PC rules. OR the GTA3 and Vice City are better on ps2 or xbox than on PC... In my opinion atleast.

While I won't bash your opinion, I do have to disagree with the GTA games being better on the console. Even when played with a mouse and keyboard, GTA is MUCH better on the PC.

I think it really depends on what you play. I think that FPS titles lend themselves better to a PC because of the available mouse. Now, I think Halo on the X-BOX was good, but I never really got the hang of the controls, although I think they are pretty good. Stupid brain!

I think that consoles are good when you don't have to have alot of complex controls. This is why I think side scrolling stuff (i.e. old school NES) is best on a console, since they tend to be simpler. They beg for a control pad over a keyboard.

Again, some titles are better on a console, others on the PC. Take Deus Ex: Invisible War. Most people who played the PC version (including myself) loathed it. I didn't play it, but alot of console players seemed to enjoy it, but I guess that's what happens when that's the target market.

console are great for fighting games, action games, platformers, racing, sports, RPGs, ect.

PCs are great for FPS, racing, MMORPG, and any online games. oh and emulators! (gooooooooo MAME! (and kawaks))

what i play is dictated by what kinda game i wanna play. its football season now, so madden on my PS2 is definately getting some action.

plus, i can't tweak my PS2, so the rest of the time when im not playin anything goes towards tweaking the PC.

I don't really play RPGs but if that was the only genre I was into, I'd just get a console. Just as many (more actually) RPGs are on console than on PC and the console is a hellava lot cheaper than PC because you do not have to upgrade it.

i like PC and consoles, but being poor i had to sell my ps2 to gather more cash for pc upgrades :D
im still missing cpu, ram, case and new psu to finish building my sys, but as soon as im done i wanna get a PSTwo, i hope its out by then (the holydays)
i like console rpgs a lot, and plataformers, and i love the GBA for some old school rpging on the go(altho i just gave my gba away :( )

No question if the emphasis is on RPG's a console is the way to game namely the PS2. Anyone who says other is lieing to you and themselfs. I say own them all. Love my PC for my FPS's but my console for fighters, racers and RPG's.

I enjoy both, but the best experiences I've had have been with consoles. I remember things like playing Shenmue for the first time (In January 2000, right after it came out in Japan) and being floored by the interactivity/graphics/voice-acting. I remember things like the first time I fought the HinD on Metal Gear Solid, or the first time I fired up Symphony of the Night. Then there were things like the first time I played PSO online (My first online game worth mentioning...the only one that worked well with 56k, which is what I was on at the time). Hell, I remember playing Super Mario World day and night when I was a kid...or the first time I played Contra. Stuff like that stands out to me.

I've had a lot of fun with PCs, but I've yet to play a game that really stood out in my mind as something revolutionary. Desert Combat gets more time from me than any other gaming-related media in my collection. I played Half Life, but it was years after release (And long after it was considered cutting edge).

same happens with me, im not as old to say that i can have some memories of hardcore pc games from back in the day, but i grew with the NES, remember the first times i played a videogame, litterally jumping off the seat when tryin to jump a pit in mario (hey, i was like 6) the first time i played contra....god i was never able to beat it w/o THE code, first castlevania, my first RPG, all those things, i cant say i have something like that from the pc, except for getting all those memories back on virtualNES

I also grew up on consoles. I remember when Tecmo Bowl came out for the NES, I swear I played that game for ever and even now like to go back to it. I think consoles have their place as does the PC. For me its a question of money plain and simple. Spend $500 on a PS2 and games or a 6800Ultra...looking a my sig you'll see which one I chose. So, now do I spend more money and get a console and neglect my 6800U? Nope, I buy PC games to see the fruits of my labor. The only way I would get a console would be if they stopped making Madden for the PC. As long as they do that I'm set...although I am having a good time play NFL 2K5 on my brother's X-box.

I enjoy PC gaming more because a lot of the games I play on it have great multiplayer capabilities. While X-Box does too (I don't have an X-Box, personally), PC multiplayer gaming is leagues beyond it. I really like FPSs, and in that genre the PC annihilates all past, present, and up-coming consoles, combined.

I tend to play action-adventure, sports, and RPGs on console. However, if a RPG was released on both PC and console, I would probably buy the PC version.

I don't agree with console RPG's being the best. I've been playing computer rpg's since the 80's starting with the original Pool of Radiance and Hillsfar, the gold box series d&d games, Eye of the Beholder series, Dark Sun, Might & Magic, Bard's Tale, etc, etc. Plus the newer crpg's like the Fallout series, Baldur's Gate series, Temple of Elemental Evil, etc, etc. I think computer rpg's are much more detailed and give you more control. That's not to say that console rpg's are bad, they're just different. But to me, rpg's will always be better on the computer.

Yeah... I agree. And to be perfectly honest, the PS2 is probably the one with the best RPGs. :D
-Final Fantasy series
-Disgaea
-La Pucelle: Tactics
-Xenosaga
-Summoner
-.hack series

I know that I've left out a lot, but these are just the ones that I've played.

Since I've had a console and Computer for a looooooooooooooooooong time (Atari 2600 and pre Apple ][ days) I can say that both have their merits and downfalls.

With consoles, the games work. Some suck, and some are great, with most inbetween. Game play is similar for many but there is a large variety to choose from.

With PC's, you may have issues getting things running on different hardware. Again, some games suck, some are fantastic don't, and most are inbetween. Game play can be vastly differernt and the types of games is all over the map.

Yah, both - depends on what you are in the mood for. The events I host have both, and it works out well. It's not and "either or" situation - a true gamer will play just about any game - PC, Console, Cards, or what have you (I know I do). If I "had" to choose, i would most likely pick the PC over the Console.

How's that for middle of the road? :D

Peace,
Tim

I don't care which platform I get an RPG on, I'm good no matter what. I do have to say that my favorite rpg's just so happened to be on consoles, but that was before PC gaming was more mainstream as it is now, well at least for myself.
I hate FPS for consoles, I'll probably change my views once I get the friggin hang of Halo (yeah I'm probably the only person left that JUST got a chance to play halo, literally last week was my first time playing it), controlling is so hard. I've heard once you learn on one your good on all console FPS because the controls are basically the same on all of them.
Regardless I do love my PC FPS........UT......Q3.....BF......Ahhhhhhhhh gotta love em!

ok maybe not 'nuff' :)

PC rpgs are more complex with more choice. I think they are a TAD better. BUUUT...don't get me wrong i LOOOVE console RPGs too. The final fantasy series: excellent!
Console RPGs are more of the...relaxing RPG for lack of a better term.
Like watching a cheesy movie you like. You know it's simple, but it's a fun ride.
PC RPGs..well..sometimes you REALLY need that manual ;)

How can you judge something like Xbox Live without actually playing it?

I have actually subscribed to Xbox Live and it is FAR more organized, stable, and feature-packed than any gaming network that I've used on the PC.

Consoles (Sports, RPG's, Fighting, Adventure, 3rd Person, Racing)
PC (Stragety, Flight Sim, FPS, MMORPG, Racing)

I grew up on console RPG's, but I can never really consider them real hardcore RPG's. They seem a bit too "dumbed down" for me. To be fair, a lot of people might not like the complex nature of PC RPG's, but I feel PC's are the way to get the truest RPG experience. RPG's were invented on the PC.

My favorite RPG's are all PC based.

- the Wizardry series. Wiz7 and Wiz8 are the two best RPGs of all time. Period.
- the Ultima series. Ultima IV was my favorite. There was a console version for NES, but it was very dumbed down.
- Baldur's Gate
- Fallout
- Morrowind
- Neverwinter Nights
- all of the MMORPG's (EQ, AO, DAoC, UO, etc.)

A lot of console based "RPG's" don't even seem to be real RPG's in my book. People seem to think that any game with a fantasy theme is an RPG. I do not consider Legend of Zelda an RPG. It's more of an overhead adventure. Likewise, there are several PC games that i feel are mis-categorized, such as Diablo. Diablo is no more of an RPG than Gauntlet is.

TRUE console RPG's would be the Dragon Warrior series, the port of Ultima, the port of Wizardry, Secret of Mana, etc.

Though there are probably a million different definitions for a roleplaying game, I'm sure one of the main components would be character advancement/development, which the Legend of Zelda series has. The same thing with Diablo, System Shock, Daggerfall, etc.

IMO you can even compare PC RPG's to a console RPG. On the PC what some call RPG's are mostly American and deal with the medieval times where'as almost all traditional RPG's on the consoles translate from Japan and deal with some kid trying to save the world and so there style is totally different to a point where they dont seem to be from the same genre at all. And besides MMORPG's does the PC even that many RPG's to begin? Morrowind, Everquest and WOW and thats about it.

Im playin Sweden on this one and saying I agree with this. Im into video games, period. whether im sitting in my comfy chair playing them, sitting on my even more comfy couch, playing them on a 4 inch screen or maybe even on a keychain. I dig all the platforms, if its a good game, its a good game, I dont need state of the art, cutting edge, interslice graphics to suck me in (although everyone must admit, sometimes it helps). If the basic gameplay mechanics get me goin for hours then its a hit to me.

I get more from PC gaming. I have had a PS2 and the bast game I played on that was SOCOM which I could find a better tactical shooter on PC anyday, Tony Hawk 3 was fun and FFX ok but I still came back to my PC. I also had a gamecube I purchased for zelda windwaker, got the bonus Ocarina disc too. PLayed a few other games but not much else was interesting. Pc Gaming is back with a vengence. Being a long time HL fan, Blizzard fan, and with Far Cry, D3 and eventually HL2. Until the next zelda maybe...console gaming is something I did when I was a kid. Can't really get in to it anymore. I am gonna have to go with PC gaming.

Well, since you said "with an emphasis on RPGs"

I'd say .. console. Final Fantasy is the main one, plus there's others that are fun as well ie Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Cross, Trigger, etc.

These are all single player which i prefer over multiplayer (in the case of RPGs)

If you want multiplayer, PC is the way to go cuz of all the ease of multiplay (no need to buy Harddrives, modem adapter accessories etc)

My friends subscribe to it and it's nothing compared to the PC. The ease at which you can join any server running any game on the PC completely blows the X-Box out of the water. With the PC I can check my friends' away messages and IMs and see if they're playing anywhere so I can join them. With X-Box live... I can't.

Mods are constantly being released for PC games. On X-Box... err, what's a mod?

Anyone can make a new map and release it, and it may or may not be good for PC gaming. With the X-Box, you can... hmm... dream!

For FPSs, on the X-Box you have to use the cumbersome controller but on the PC you can use the mouse/keyboard combo - the best for FPSs, no questions asked.

Additionally, there's a significantly larger amount of customizability server side for PC games that X-Box doesn't have. There are a ton of server side mods for games based on the HL engine that can customize gameplay to an extent. On the X-Box there's... nothing.

Basically, online gaming on the X-Box screams of shortcomings. If you have a few titles you like to play online, then it is a decent service, but as a whole it's not even comprable to PC gaming, they're on entirely different levels.
