sup yall.

i never dealt with connecting fibre optics over 5 miles, so this is going to be doozy. im looking to connect two datacenters via dark fibre (keyspan). the distance between these two sites are at least 30 miles.

im looking to do 10gb between these two locations with xenpak modules.

based on the xenpak metrics chart, im going to need to use Cisco XENPAK-10GB-ZR (80km).

with light traveling over this distance, there will be loss. any tips/suggestions for setting this up so i avoid loss?

i'm goign to assume it's single mode fiber. if so, you should be fine with the 80km gbics. if they say that they support that distance, you shouldn't have any significant loss of signal.

only tips i could give either way is don't wrap up the fiber in circles. keep it as straight as possible. i'm not even sure if that makes a difference anyway, but i think it might if the distances are long enough.

Where are you at that you have the ability to run 30 miles of fibre by yourself?

i think he's saying the fiber is already run. it was dark fiber, which is fiber that has been run but never been used. now they want to use it.

Those XENPaks won't break a sweat at that distance. You may even need to pad the optical receive on each end to avoid burning those out. I've smoked a few XENPaks in my day as they are a little sensitive.

You should be fine, make sure you get db readings when you hookup the XENPaks so that you have a baseline in case you run into issue down the road.

we just got an optical meter in the office so i think i will be doing db readings before buying any optical hardware. i hate to tell my vendor that i want to return xenpaks. haha.
