Hi

I have networking

my stuff always falls offline,

and then I can get keys and codes...and passphrases to get back on

duh!

I am in two apartments, 1200 square feet approx each floor...one on top of the other.

I am using linksys wrt54gs router and a linksys card in my (one of a few computers I have) an xp system

it works ok, but is slow , and with the new xps 730 I got, I dont want the router to be the weak spot

do I get the 1 gigabyte dual band linksys stuff? 610N router and adapter?

do I need dual band, and what is the 5Gig band for?

thanks

sorry

I was on two excedrin and a LARGE redbull when I typed this...

so, I have a wireless network

it is slow

What would be the "best" router to get to speed up a home system with 3 MS machines and 2 macs, and a color /laser printer...oh, and a scanner

I was thinking a Linksys WRN-610T

what do you guys and gals use?

thanks

What transfer rates are you getting with your current connection?

What signal strength are you getting?

What are your transfer rates if you are right next to your current WAP? (100% signal strength)

How do I check transfer rates?

If there a s/w program or applet (sp) for that?

Where do I find it, and then I can check...

Oh, thank you. Uhmmmm makes sense, get a baseline where I am at now, ie check my current transfer rate.

The i7 920 with vista home premium 32 --- 3gb mem is faster than my XP machine!

But I will get the current transfer rates once I know how to do that, then I can see if that is the bottle neck to my surfing!

Oh, and a faster network in the house will mean faster transfer between machines, if need be (but maybe I will use a portable hard drive for that..)

Thanks

Al

Just transfer a large file from one machine to the other.

Btw, I survive off excedrine and redbull.

I have an untangle box and a wireless N access point.

I use a WRT54G v3 or v3.1 with DD-WRT. Have been for years now. Works great.

DD-WRT

what is that?

and what is an untangle box? is that a manufacture or product name?

thanks!

I currently have a wrt54gs linksys router....and a PCI card wireless linksys with the little antennea out the back of my XP system

the vista dell 730x box is direct into the router....not wireless yet

and has a usb connector for "network backups"

it is an N router, and ahs 1G speed.....

I also got a new cat 5e cable, cuz my 24" imac is wired direct to the router...

will let yah know how it goes!

this is for a linksys router, the WRTU54G-TM (the tmobile version, I have tmobile at home service, andd this thing takes a sim card for that)

see how long it takes to transfer a 7gb movie i mean linux file thing....

"linux file thing"? I dont know what that is

so, trnasfer a 7gb movie from one computer to another, or from my isp to my computer?

oh, I got the 610 installed

speedtest.net results seem to be the same......maybe my ISP sucks

I have verizon dsl here in NYC

this is the NEW 610 results....

this is the other 54g results from last night...just copied it from the other page so it would be easier to compare...

this is for a linksys router, the WRTU54G

here are my results from another internet speed testing page....

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Last Result:
Download Speed: 2190 kbps (273.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 723 kbps (90.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

hmmmm

so, is the new 610 router giving me any more speed from my ISP?

or just speed from my 610 to my computer systems.....

where is the bottleneck, and how can I fix/improve that?
