Your Feedback Matters – Update on Xbox One
By Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business posted June 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM
Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

site is getting slashdotted, here's a paste of the text:
Microsoft to Pull Complete Reversal on Xbox One DRM Policies
by Patrick Klepek on June 19, 2013
Sources indicate Microsoft is going to move away from what's caused the company so much headache.
The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped
It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”

Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Microsoft has taken an enormous amount of heat regarding DRM policies with its new console. Sony became consumer heroes at E3, announcing PlayStation 4 would not treat used games differently, and the status quo would reign. The company released this video, twisting the knife:

Of course, Xbox One is still $499 and PlayStation 4 is still $399. But today moves the needle.

It's going to be a shame if they get rid of the feature that will let you share your games with up to 10 others. :(

I don't see why they would. If you have Internet you should be able to take advantage of those bonus features. If you do not have Internet you cannot take advantage of them.

^ example of the type of features that will cause people to want to be online, not force them to be online.

One thing to keep in mind about the 10 person sharing feature is that you may have to be in a famil pack. I don't think they will let you just share the games with 10 random people. Everyone has to be on the same plan. Doesn't Microsoft offer Live family plans where it's one bill and the parents can set restrictions and such?

Still buying PS4. I'll be happy with that at launch. Maybe wait a year for Xbox One to lower price or just wait until a Kinect-free version comes out. Microsoft really soured my mouth. You can only insult someone so much until a apology or reversal is too little too late.

Remember, what Microsoft tried to impose (and still don't know specifics about what is being reversed) is only a taste of what we will see in the future. Remember even after the PS3 released, they could take features away.

I still feel way more comfortable and confident with Sony.

If this turns out true, there's no doubt what "caused this huge change in policy right after E3". Gamers via pre-orders. What, MS just woke up one day and thought "Hey, they're right, these restrictions /are/ dumb". No. The only thing that changes something like this are real numbers.

So much for leading us all into the all-digital future, huh?

Damage is done. To gamers and to mass media. And they are still $100 more expensive.

You fucked up M$. Just changing your policy doesn't fix everything. It makes Sony even more vindicated for their choices on PS4.

I am pleasantly surprised. I'm buying a PS4 as I originally planned to well before any of this shitstorm started spinning, with the prospects of maybe (a big fat 'maybe') getting an X1. This more importantly will come as a relief to the Xbox crowd (I will not use the word "fanboy" I hate that shit).

this is very good news for that side of the fence and might save the system from getting shit-canned righteously, which would be very bad for the market.

Way to go guys, democracy!

Also here as well looks to be the case http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/...online-requirements.aspx#.UcIOhqZnXfc.twitter

I would bet anything that they were sure Sony was doing the same thing and Sony pulled a Nintendo and came out after and said "I don't know what the fuck your talking about were doing this" like the Sony vs Nintendo E3 back when they were gonna make a disc based system together and big N have them the finger.

Either way I'm still buying both to go with my Wii U.

But Don, you told me the 360 is the console I should get if I don't want to always be online.

What tools. This just makes them look worse.

This is like SOPA, they let this one slide then come in and do the same things in 6 months when everyone has forgotten. They have stated their intentions and are now just going to do it in a more underhanded way. :p

regardless of the price, they will sell an incredibly higher amount of systems now.

got to give them props. they mustve seen the preorder numbers or something. or maybe the gif page hahahahah

No they don't PS4 doesn't include the move camera add that and there 40 bucks apart.

Yeah, in Australia the PS4 + Move Camera is more than what the Xbox One costs here.

Sony has a special history of gouging Australians pretty hard.

Accused of trolling wow. OK well guess I'm sorry but this console stuff has gone beyond crazy.

Now watch all you pussies that wanted this change still bitch. Cry me a fucking river.

You should define what you mean, otherwise it's just more nonsense.

E.g. Does Microsoft still pay you to promote them now their control scheme has failed? :p

Must grasp straw...
Must grasp straw...failed!

You don't need the camera to play anything, therefore it's not a required cost, the Xcrap still needs the spy camera. :p

While I didn't care THAT much about their original policies, I like this because now people are more apt to buy the system and competition is a good thing.
I'm still not sure if I'll be buying either system in the next year, but I'm definitely more likely to now.

They could remove it because in order to use it you need some of that evil DRM. By the way it's now in the news that STEAM is going to be implementing a sharing system nearly identical to what the Xbox One was going to have.

In regards to a family pack thing, I don't know how exactly this was going to work. I think they recently discontinued the family pack thing they've had for the 360. Not sure if it was going to be replaced with something else.

Read my posts nobody pays me I'm neutral but there are too many threads full of whiney fanboys here or people that are PC hardcore's and just trolling.

I could give a shit less but they obviously listened to the masses.

I know who the fucking fanboys on here are and I am not one. So don't even try to lump me into that shit.
-sent with a middle finger from my Wii U

That's a selling point IMO. Does the PS4 watch your kids for you? Nope. Extra $100 = totally worth it.

No not that kind of watch. The kind where MS is watching your daughter's BF sneaks in and they're getting it on, on the living room couch. All for Ballmer's amusement... well and you... You just gave him $500 for letting him watch that.

This is like SOPA, they let this one slide then come in and do the same things in 6 months when everyone has forgotten. They have stated their intentions and are now just going to do it in a more underhanded way. :p

If they did that , there would be a mass sell off of used Xbox One's. I seriously , SERIOUSLY doubt that they want the clusterfuck of bad PR that they got with this policy in place .. all over again.

If anything they will be doing damage control to repair their image with the consumers they lost over this shit storm.

This is probably the best news of the last 3 months with this crap.

Now I'll buy an Xbox One , day one.
