Sorry I know this is a complete noobish question.

If I want to convert AVI video files to a format I can burn to DVD and be readable by most modern DVD players. Then which format should I be converting to? I've been poking around and reading about MKV, MP4, H.264 etc, but that shit is mostly greek to me.

I know MP4 is an apple format so I'm guessing I don't want that for DVD players.

Any help would be appreciated. Also could anyone recommend a free software that's noob friendly to convert the files? I tried with the nero essentials program I have that came with my DVD drive, but that couldn't do it.

if you have Win 7 or Win Vista, just use Windows DVD Maker.....it should be able to read .avi's...depending on the coden

ps- H.264 is a codec ;)

Wow I feel dumb.

Never even thought to try that program. Then again, I haven't played with much in Win7 yet.

Cheers mate! Worked like a charm.

no problem man, i ran into it a few years ago with vista for a school project....it honestly was way easier than doing Roxio(which i had on that machine as well), but ya enjoy
