thanks for that script. it boggles the mind how much needless shit they've tried to ram down people's throats. and those are only the options we have access to changing. it could be months before people figure out how to uninstall or disable the bloat and data collection crap that isn't visible.

Good script to keep around, I wonder how long it'll be till MS puts out a mandatory update that enables them again and removes the ability to uninstall/disable them.

An excellent find and I will add it to the first post list right now, thank you very much.

I also like to say, I don't get why are people arguing with each other here, I made this thread for like minded people like D4rkn3ss to post great tips and changes we can make to windows 10 to remove what we don't want or plan on using, I said this many times before if you don't wish to modify your Windows 10 installation and keep everything at default that's absolutely fine but why come here and start an argument about it. Its not like I ever said its mandatory for every one to modify their OS otherwise it will be useless.

Please if you don't want to make changes, don't come here and start raging at others, simply ignore this thread and move on.

And I never said "don't do it", I said do it right and block it at the router. That way you still have a fully functional OS, and if something doesn't work right, you can selectively fix whatever feature that is... without ripping it from the core of the OS.

I don't like to make inbound or outbound firewall rules in my router when I can get rid of it from its core, with every version of windows I make these changes and modifications, such as remove the useless apps that I don't use or disable services which I take no advantage of, I have yet to experience any problems.

guys, dude who made that script is including a undo script on his next version, i'll post here (or someone else does) when its done.

I think this thread has run it's course before some folks get carried away.

At the request of the OP, I'm going to reopen this thread with a clear warning. Any more flaming or trolling in this thread will be instant 30-day ban. Take it to PM.
Heed Kyle's warning here.

I would Like this post to be a sticky. I think there are many people who would like to get rid of apps. I have 8 computers and/or laptops which I will probable upgrade over the next year. It would be handy if it were a sticky for future reference.

I wouldn't mind that however I won't push for it considering it just got locked a few minutes ago, as I said all I want is a little informative database about some useful "OPTIONAL" changes we can make to Windows 10.

Edit: Added D4rkn3ss all in one script and some changes to formatting for a better read.

ah, if the "Disable Windows Defender" dont work do:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender]
"DisableAntiSpyware"=dword:00000001

just reposting. :)

i just ran 1.6 and is working properly, i didnt choose to disable windows defender though, my god what a relief man, i think im starting to like 10 now lol :D

Personally my self, I disabled Windows Defender, Security Center and Windows Firewall on Win10 and previews Versions of Windows as I generally don't use any antivirus programs or anything. Currently the one minor problem I'm having is the annoying notifications that pop up after a reboot due to the fact that I have disabled the following services I mentioned above, sadly I have not figured out how to disable these notifications yet.

Notification pops up each time after a reboot:

oh its because im running on a guinea (the little piggy) machine, im taking it slow and just using win 10 as a toy for now :p

Jesus Christ the Calculator is straight ugly as fuck. I want my old one back. I use my calculator a lot

Well I've been doing these kinds of modifications and changes to Windows ever since XP, If anything on older hardware in the past it has always served as a performance boost. And if something should go horribly wrong I can always reformat, For me is basically a journey of discovery every time a new Windows comes out.

Ok nvm what I said, They seem to have removed the old one from windows 10 sadly. Damn shame :(

lol Yeah I had the old one pin on the taskbar and the first time i click on it, it gave me a error. So I un-pin it and search for calculator and all I could find is the new one

I really hope that OblyTile gets updated for Windows 10 support, I used that program to make custom tiles for Windows 8.1 Start menu and really loved it.

But at least its resizable and scales properly. Sure it could look better, not sure why they didn't at least add some color themes, it would look pretty slick with a dark theme but the scaling and resizing make it more useful than the old one.

I dont know why I've seen so much angst about the calculator. I NEVER use the built-in calculator. There are plenty of other FREE alternatives on the Internet, including Virtual TI if you want to dump your TI calculator's ROM. This is what I have installed on every PC I own for when I don't have my actual TI-89 handy.

If anybody hates when you open File Manager and the Quick Access opens up, there is a way to change it without registry hacks.

File Manager -> View tab -> Options-> Open File Explorer To (change it to This PC)

done.

I can understand disabling some of the telemetry stuff, maybe, but disabling services for no gain, or disabling antivirus...sheesh. :( This stuff isn't "bloat", or at best, in the case of services, taking a small risk for no real gain.

At this point to most it isn't about trying to free up system resources or speeding up boot times, it's about unnecessary features such as apps that some won't ever use, tracking in places that isn't easy to remove/disable, or in the case of defender personal preference on choice of AV. Also to some it's an early learning experience on a new OS, for me I love anything that involves using Powershell.

At the end of the day, it isn't all that much different from people trying to OC/WC their computer, some people don't want to touch it out of fear of breaking something, others will take it to the extremes knowing it might break. Biggest difference here is "breaking" usually equates to errors/BSODs with a possible need for reinstall, which is far less costly than burning up/shorting out components.

Don't worry about what other people choose to do by having more options..

I swear it's like some people have forgotten why we're even running Windows in the first place.

Crap! I mindlessly deleted the Recovery partition on W10 last night--am I doomed to a life of failure and discontent now? Honestly, anyone know what the consequences of that might be? System still seems to run OK. Not sure how to get it back or if I really need it. Serious question.

Deleting the recovery partition is not going to effect windows, it main purpose is to use it as a cleanup or restore tool with out formatting the OS in case something goes wrong with your OS in the future you could boot into that. If you know how to do a fresh installation of windows all will return by default again.

Thanks for filling me in on the missing recovery partition. I was fooling around with Diskpart to try to show someone else how to use it--didn't think it would let me delete a partition that was in use--guess it will. This version of W10 is still the 10240 tech preview and understand there will be an upgrade to it before long so guess I'll worry about the missing partition if I can't take the next upgrade. Not worth reformatting and reinstalling as it is only a "playground" OS for now.

The problem started by having all these leftover Sytem Reserved and Recovery partitions from previous installs, other OS and such. Never know which ones can be removed and which ones the OS actually needs. Haven't found any sure-fire way to make that determination. The four partition limit becomes a problem after numerous upgrades and dual boots and the like. OutlawXGP, you seem like a smart person--any idea of a way to figure out which of all the partitions are in use/needed and which can be blown away? The sizes and placements seem to be random. The system file partitions are pretty obvious, its all those other little partitions that get scattered around that are problematic. Does Windows really need any of them?

My advice to you is to back up all your data and install a fresh copy of Windows 10 from the ISO burned into a DVD or USB Stick, then choose custom install and delete all the partition from the HDD that has many left over partition and create a single new one. Now depending on if your BIOS is using UEFI or not windows will create some mini partition around the size of 300MB for repair and utilities as standard but you will only see one big partition under it which Windows will be installed on.

Edit: keep in mind that with the complete "fresh installation" method you have to reinstall all your necessary drivers and programs.

If you have other physical hard drives in your PC that you use for raw data storage, then you don't really have to reformat them.

Thanks for the information. Guess I'll spend part of my day off cleaning up the mess on my SSD! Have let it get out of control for a while with dual boots and myriad W10 upgrades. Will leave the Windows 7 volume alone as it only has the two partitions created by the W7 install.

Really nothing important to backup on the W10 install as it is just for play and experimenting at this point. It is activated for now and not sure if it will reactivate if I do a clean install. The Windows Insider thing has been on hold while RTM has been rolling out. Should be starting up again in the next few days.
