Clean Your Damn Computer!

Just slightly dusty is all.. nothing a shovel and wheelbarrow.. or perhaps an industrial strength leaf blower.. can't handle

Seen worse... Smokers who never dust anything can do some damage to everything

Not to sound like a dick, but shouldn't PC maintenance be part of the tech departments job (I'm assuming you are calling your IT support the tech department)? Do you also rag on the teachers that don't break out the pipe wrench when they hear a a toilet that is slowly wasting water?

Teachers should be busy teaching, techies should be busy maintaining technology.
 
not as bad as some of the others but first one is 1 month old server, 2nd one is new client

At that point, you build a hermetically sealed case using low power components (so everything stays cool), and never touch the damn thing again.

Every month or so I take the 3 filters off the front of my Antec 1200 case and wipe them down.. back in the case... presto... very little dust inside the case.
 
Just an FYI for anybody that still uses compressed air, you should really take a look at the Datavac ED500 electric duster. I had mines for about two years now and I have absolutely no regrets in buying it. Its just as strong as the initial burst of compressed air, but it doesn't whittle down like compressed air does due to pressure loss. Never again will I have to purchase canned air again... unless I see a huge ass bug in the corner that I can't reach... lol

Ditto. I have one as well. Best investment I've ever made. My buddy borrows it once every 4-5 months. It's absolutely outstanding. Comes with an assortment of attachments. Build quality is excellent. The airflow.....holy crap this thing puts out some mean winds.
 
Its so dusty here in the Phoenix area that it wouldn't take that long for it to get that bad.
 
This thread reminds me why I no longer offer to look at builds I didn't construct myself. Any computer I put together I maintain, period. If someone brought in a tower for me to look at that was in this conditions I would laugh....hysterically.

Yeah, I worked at a job where I did computer work for people. People would bring in some nasty computers man, really should be considered a health hazard. Fuckin slobs.

Hey, I monitized this problem back when I was running an Apple service department.

$39 ($49 for Compact Mac's), included dusting with compressed air/brush as needed, new CMOS Battery, case cleaned on the outside, etc. A yearly clean-up.

No advertising necessary. Back then, in the early to mid/late 90's, batteries on Mac II"s through the Early PowerMac's were dying on a regular schedule.

And they won't boot when the battery is dead :)

Good deal for customers, and kept us from simply handing batteries out over the counter at a 30 cent profit.

I'm pretty sure the # I did were in the thousands.
 
I'm the poster of the pic in the OP. I see a few of you saw some of the issues with that machine other than the dust. I can safely tell you I did not build this machine, I'd kill myself if I did:

1. Side fan was set as exhaust not intake, fan was literally seized up in addition to being stopped up completely.

2. That rear fan was set as intake not exhaust.

3. There is a bulging/blown cap above the video card.

4. Some of the add-in cards were not screwed down at all.

5. You can't see it but the video card fan power cable had one wire broken/pulled out of the power connector. Also, at least three caps on the video card were bulging/leaking.

6. The front door of the case felt like it was practically glued shut, had to pry it open with a screwdriver. :eek:

And customer wandered why it wouldn't boot into Windows... :)
