Okay, we gave Apple crap when they deleted the headphone jack on the new iPhones. We even poked a little fun at the crew in Cupertino for charging $25 for a cable to connect an iPhone to a MacBook Pro. That said, I'm not sure if this new "controversy" is something that will upset anyone. Where are my Mac guys at, is this something that upsets you? Let us know.

The iconic chiming startup sound was originally made to indicate that diagnostic tests have found no hardware or software issues. A similar sound has accompanied almost every Mac boot sequence since 1991 and the most recent F-sharp chord incarnation was first used in the iMac G3.

I won't leave my MacBook Air on mute all the time.
Actually this was super helpful for anyone who has ever got to a meeting/class with a powered down laptop.

I never really shut mine down all the way, so when I do turn it on from all the way off, it actually surprises me. :D

You could look at it symbolically as ritualistic suicide...

This. To me that sound was one of the single most absurd things about a damn Mac. The fact that you had no way to turn that garbage off was basically infuriating every time you turned a system on. There are actually programs you can download that will mute the sound on shutdown, then on startup set it back to the normal volume just so you don't have to listen to that awful sound. Nothing is worse than having listened to music before you shut down the device, only to have the volume at 100% so when you power it up it will wake up half the house at midnight. /rant

I could be wrong, but the chime was on the original Mac.

I don't have a opinion either way. It is useful to know the computer rebooted, but at the same time if I have my Mac's on mute it doesn't bother me not hearing it. But there have been times when I hear the sound without telling it to boot and I go investigate what just happened.

However it is useful on Mac Pro's that have non-Apple video cards because you do not get the initial white screen with Apple logo, so hearing that sound at least lets you know the computer is trying to boot. Then you have to wait for it drop to desktop to actually get a video signal on non-Apple card (but they do work).

EDIT: I will say that I do like "splash screens". So I do like that the sound is there, just like I like seeing the 3DFx logo when starting a game back in the day or seeing the Dolby Digital or THX splash screen before a movie back in the 90's.

On the windows side, I've had my computer take a long time to shut down and the task list will show it's waiting to play the shutdown sound. Really? They couldn't have just made that process low enough priority that shutdown won't wait on it?

They removed it, so they could put in the original Playstation startup sound.

    (I loved that sound...)
