Chrome brings laptop to it's knees!

I have an older laptop. i5-5257U w/8 GB of ram and a run of the mill SSD.

Chrome just kills this thing, opening a tab or two ramps up the fan and cpu, slows everything else down.

Is there anything I can do? I am pretty tied into Chrome, starting over with another browser is not something I want to do.

Thats not a bad idea, I have a number of extensions running that sync from my desktop that I don't even need on this machine.
