Need some advice in choosing an os for the new rig i am building. I defiantly need a version of windows but im not sure exactly what to go with. The rig will have a q6600 or q6700 processor, 1x BFG 8800gt oc, creative xfi, 4 gb ram, 500 gb hdd. If you need any other info just let me know.

If you want DX10, and if you want to utilize all 4 gigs of ram... your going to want Vista... I'd say Home Premium 64bit....

If you want to be able to utilize all 4 GB you will need a 64-bit Windows, leaving you with Windows XP x64 and Vista 64-bit. Out of those I would recommend Vista Home Premium 64-bit, unless you had a real desire to spend more for Vista Business or Ultimate. Vista will let you use the DX10 features of the video card, though I am not sure about Creative's driver support for Vista.

I took a look because one of my friends told me that creative didn't have vista drivers for the xfi, but i saw some on there as of October 7th. How can i get the 64 bit versions and how much is it. I know you can contact microsoft and they will send it to you but im not sure where to get that information.

Vista x64 Home Premium or Vista x64 Business Editions are what I'd recommend.

If you are buying a new OS, why not just buy the x64 version to begin with?

You buy a key based on the options package of Vista, Home Premium for example.

There is no difference between 32bit/64bit in the key. A Home Premium key is a Home Premium key no matter 32 or 64.

You can buy the 32bit from newegg or wherever just fine as that is what has the highest availability. Then pay the shipping cost to have MS send you 64bit disc or just torrent it.

Alright thanks, im still thinking of dual booting xp/vista to see if i like vista but im definatly going for the 64 bit versions

In case you were wondering i decided to use the 64 bit version of vista home premium because thats what i managed to snag in the intel retail edge program

Good.
I would think it would be safe to say 95% of the people who have made the jump to 64 bit Vista (on later hardware- the people running older hardware shouldn't be considering ANY version of Vista in the first place) have had no problems and are happy with it.

The only hurdle (which is almost a non-issue nowadays) is getting drivers for your hardware.

Thats only true for retail versions. OEM version keys only for 1 or the other, not both.
