At first I was appalled to learn that Chinese prisoners are being forced to play WoW in prison. But then, the more I thought about it, playing video games all day sure beats the hell out of hard labor on the chain gang. :D Thanks to Lethal for the link.

A former prisoner of a Chinese labor camp claims guards are forcing detainees to play online games as part of a huge money-making scam. Liu Dali told The Guardian website that guards traded the credits inmates built up playing games such as World of Warcraft for money.

that honestly seems brilliant. make prisoners become gold farmers, they make money selling gold, the cash is then put into the prison as a way for it to sustain itself and use less of my tax money.
I approve.

As if prison wasn't bad enough already. Being forced to play that terrible game is simply inhuman.

Hope you don't think that is what the Chinese prison wardens are doing..

Dali said that if he didn't complete his credit quota, the guards would punish him: "They would beat me with plastic pipes. We kept playing until we could barely see things."

nothing sucks the fun out of gaming like the threat of being beat with plastic pipes.

Stamping license plates or grinding WOW gold...don't see too much of an issue, outside of the normal brutality of Chinese jail. Of course I could see Chinese authorities having a very big issue with it if the warden was running this as his private money making scheme.

I'm still waiting for someone to remark on the similarities regarding the social stigmas associated with both prison rape and playing WoW.

If they are forced to play WoW all the time, they won't have time for conjugal visits! Oh wait...

So Chinese prison is the same as real life now, eh?

Unfortunately, I bet a bunch of these guys are only in prison in the first place for writing in their blog about the government or some other horrible offense.

Eh, I'll take plastic pipes over brass pipes any day. Although, if I had my choice, I'd go with pool noodles to be honest.

I wouldn't be suprised if hackers had jobs to create botnets or create general malware.

Specially for the long hours. The RSI symptoms. The Depression. The Desire to watch pr0n and not being able to do it. And the list goes on.

Can we just cut the data lines to them now? The internet would become a better place with them excised out of it.

So it's okay for prisoners to farm gold so westerners can send more money to Chinese prison officials?

I always imagined that Chinese prisons were ran like in the famous prison documentary "Riki Oh - The Story of Riki".

It might not sound too bad, but gold-grinding is hardly playing the game the way you want to play. I'm sure they probably have stringent quotas that they have to fill...

I do hope we will soon realize banning chinese IP's and, and disallowing them to have access to proxy and SSH services to get local IP's will save the world much pain, and make the internet instantly better.

Not that it is easy to cut off their access, but if it were...

Cut them off from the world, allow them access only under extreme tariffs, using the money to buy off the debt. Also they could be given discounts for improving Humans Rights issues in their country.

Perhaps, but the guard boss keeps the money for himself. I doubt if the Chinese government gave him the go-ahead with this. Didn't their government try to crack down on gold farming a couple years back? If anything, they'll make the guard boss use the money to sustain the prison and prisoners, then yeah it'll be nice to take the burdens off of taxpayers.

That would be a great way to destroy the US economy.

Blizzard told me the fraud charge on my Amex this month had an IP orginating in China. I wouldn't doubt this could be related seeing how lawless everything seems to be when I go over there. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that goes on over there - using brick powder to make fake Chili pepper poweder, "sink-oil' (a reprocessed sink-waste oil from hot-pots obtianed from drainage of the back of restaurants).

Beats a prison rape as well. Imagine how pissed of the guards would be if your the leading money maker for them and can't play the next day coz you got 3 to 4 stitches on your Anus. They would execute the Bub Fook Yoo on the spot

I doubt they would get the benefit of stitches in such a case.
You sick monkey.
