Space debris from multiple space programs is really becoming a problem in earth orbit. To combat this issue the Chinese plan to use some of their left over components to build an IoT orbiting the earth. The plan is to attach tiny chips to most of the major components and use them for experiments and as communications platforms. I think the plan sounds interesting, but I'm a little bit concerned about these devices since we have enough trouble securing them on earth. However, to be fair, they will enable better tracking of all that junk so that's a good thing. What could go wrong?

Fudan University's Zheng Lirong, the chief scientist of the program, said discarded rocket sections during space launches constitute the largest percentage of space debris. By installing multiple chip systems on the rocket, the team has established the initial stage of a space-based Internet of Things.

Considering China unnecessarily increased the amount of junk by a factor of a few thousand a few years back I find this kind of ...hmmmm.

In related news, Elon Musk announces a joint venture between Space-X and Tesla to create the first autonomous space waste removal company.

Seriously though, autonomous electric vehicles that scoop up space waste and either burn them in re-entry or return them for re-use could be a lucrative business.

Better yet: scoop up space junk then burn prograde until out of earth's orbit. Adios, space junk!

Perhaps this is something many people could agree upon as a good purpose and responsibility of the UN. They should require funding to remove space junk proportional to the amount caused by each country.

Nice idea in principle. But this is the UN, somehow they'll find a way to get the United States to do more than their fair share and also relieve rogue nations of responsibility.

I don't know what kind of drugs are popular in China, but this article is evidence that there's popular drugs.

what if the space debris ironically helps lower the amount of UV, solar flares and global temps? lol
