Xinhua News Agency, the government-run news agency of China, has unveiled their first AI news anchor. The anchor made "his" debut at the World Internet Conference, and the news agency claims he "learns from live broadcasting videos by himself and can read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor." The South China Morning Post claims that the English and Chinese version of the virtual anchor were developed separately, and that they are "now available throughout Xinhua's internet and mobile platforms such as its official Chinese and English apps, WeChat public account, and online TV webpage." News clips featuring the AI anchor are already popping up on Xinhua's Youtube channel.

A clip of the Chinese version of the anchor needs a flash plugin to view, but you can check out the English version here.

The AI news anchor was jointly developed by Xinhua News Agency, the official state-run media outlet of China, and Chinese search engine company Sogou.com. According to Xinhua, "he" has become a member of its reporting team and can work 24 hours a day on its official website and various social media platforms, reducing news production costs and improving efficiency.

to be fair they are just talking heads so why not save money for someone who just reads what other people write.

keep it classy san diego

You mean this thing reads everything we put in front of it, with no complaints? It doesn't need health insurance or an HR department, and it will never try and unionize the office?

edit: Why does it look like his cheeks are stuffed with cotton? Maybe its the way the mouth is animated. The eye blinks are pretty good but those eyebrows...

Could they not give him a non-robotic voice? Why go to that level of visual realism and give him a cartoon voice?

Another few years and Hollywood may be a completely different place. It's a good thing they're practicing all their political skills today, because they may need them soon in order to find a job.

While i know some joke about it, its something i can actually very much see happening. you can then make a base film, then for each market change the textures on the actors to more racially appeal to the local market.

Reminds me of Deus ex, the game, oh and 1984.

But seriously, the tech is actually quite impressive.

Yeah, love Deus Ex game (original). Regarding this AI thing, it still doesn't sound natural which is disappointing as you'd think by now computer speech should be much better. Seems more of a technology showcase as undoubtedly it would be a lot cheaper for them to keep a real person ;)

I want an AI news anchor modeled after Jack Webb's Detective Joe Friday, who gives me "just the facts" without spin or hype.
But who am I kidding? No one under 60 would watch that.

And they managed to make it even nerdier. Does China not understand their own stereotypes?
