I haven't seen too many good deal on the GTX 260 card as of late. I wanted to pick one up soon, but judging from the prices on new egg i'd be better of just dumping the cash on a 280! The price difference on some of the cards is within the 20-30 dollar range! How is this possible? Am I living in the twilight zone?

The pending releases of the GTX 295 and 285 is causing the price drops on the 280. The 285 will be 55nm and have higher stock clocks.

Yeah, prices are weird right now. The 260 went up in price from ~250 for the 216 core version to ~270 + shipping while the 280 has dropped down to ~285 AR + FS since the 285 is coming out.

I don't really see the 280 changing much in price until they finally sell those out after the 285 is released so if you need a card *now* the 280 is probably a decent choice and worth the extra premium over the overpriced 260s. The 285 will have higher stock clocks but it's not absolutely guaranteed to overclock better. See the 55nm v. 65nm 260 comparison even though EVGA does have a highly clocked SSC version.

Over time, the 260 prices will fall again and be a better bargain compared to the 280/285 but who knows how long that will take? Alternatively, if you don't mind going ATI, the 4870 1GB version gives similar performance for some games and is a lot cheaper than the overpriced 55nm scalping that's happening now on these new releases.

the egg used to have a few more 260's models, mostly at the low end. IIRC aside from the MSI card that went from $200 to $230 all the cheapos from a few weeks ago are sold out.

Yeah, the MSI was 200. That was a solid deal, especially after all the cashback/rebate stuff to drop it down to 160-170.

FWIW, there's a Galaxy (*shrug*) 260-216 for 230 AR if you want to gamble on that giant MIR.

There's an open box MSI card right in the hot deals section for $158 or so.
