I built a machine for my friend, e4300 overclocked to 3.15. The only thing it is missing is a video card (currently has an old 6800gt i had laying around.) I want to buy him a video card, but dont want to spend a ton.

I know the 4850 is a good option at $150, but was trying to get something in the $80 range. a 9600? The motherboad is a gigabyte ga-dsr3, only 1 pcie slot.

I doubt you'll find a 9600 in the $80 range. If your friend plans to game at all, I wouldn't go with anything less than an 8800 GT or 4850.

If you don't wanna deal with rebates and such, then the 2600XT/3650 wouldnt be that bad a step for about $80 -/+ a few bucks.

Go for an 8800gts 320mb. Great card and I doubt he will be running a monitor that wouldn't let him max everything out. I have one and I love it.

No, the G80 is pretty weak in comparison to the G92 cards, he would be better off with the 256mb 8800GT.

If he is running a 22" monitor you might as well suck it up and buy a 512mb card, I don't think a 256/320mb is going to be able to handle 1680x1050 resolutions.

But again, point me in the direction of a 256mb 8800gt for the op's budget. I can spout off about all the nice cards that are out there, I am just trying to give him more options in his desired price range.

options so far:
1- $100 ($80 rebate) for an 8800 gt 256meg card
2- $199 ($50 rebate) for a 4850
3 -Try and find a used 8800 512meg card for $100
4- $150 512meg 8800gt
5- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102703

option 1 isnt great because he will be using 1650x1080 resoluion
option 2, didnt want to spend $200
option 3, havent found any used cards yet
option 4, with rebate 4850 is better option
option 5, know nothing about this card... will read about it

Agreed - do not go with the 8800GT 256 mb. It is seriously hampered by the lack of memory at higher res. Either the 8800GT (which can play anything current at full settings except crysis) or the 4850 (a bit more but better overall performance).

thanks for all the suggestions. Issue solved.

Another friend has a Radeon HD 2600XT 512MB as a spare (he upgraded to 4850). So for free i can put this into the machine and eventually upgrade to the 4850.
