I used to use Snagit then I switched to Windows built in Snipping tool. What features specific to it do you need?

You should be able to use OBS to do screen recording (ignoring the streaming functionality); if you have an NVIDIA graphics card (and the GeForce Experience app), you can use that to capture the desktop as well.
Greenshot and ShareX are both freeware alternatives to SnagIt.

I do vid tutorials too. I've tried lots of shit. On Windows, Camtasia has just been the best option I've found so far. More options on Mac for similar.

Yeah, but like I said, for Windows, I think it's about as good as you can get.

Depending on how long you need it, you can get Adobe Premiere for $50/month using Creative Cloud.
I've heard CamStudio is a good free alternative, but I found it was ok to record, but you still need editing software.

Plus, depending on what you use it for, it's a tax write off, so there's that silver lining. I haven't seen other resellers of it. Sometimes there are coupons or sales.

On Camtasia? That's only with the trial, no water marks with a license.

What about NVidia Shadowplay ? - as mentioned by zero2dash ?
I've used Shadowplay lots for recording games and also for recording desktop and applications too. It works great (assuming you've got a reasonable NVidia GPU). - requirements are discussed here - note the comments re: a GTX class GPU - https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/975424/shadowplay-system-requirements/

...alternatively I've heard and read OBS is a good freeware solution too.

    ...that's 2 free solutions - both from zero2dash ... ?
