CDW Outlet Finds

Hmm tempted by the 6TB. Going by your first post, "open box or return" - I am curious how the previous owner handled the drive lol.
Hard drive is something I'm a bit more picky about when it comes to handling.

Anytime an outlet item goes out of stock, it has either been purchased or removed from inventory for liquidation.

This is open box? I was trying to figure out what condition this was and I dont see anything just 5 year warranty.

oh because it says availability 3-5 days? Does that mean you can't buy it?

So this is a good question, and I'll give you my experience with the drives I've gotten via the outlet.

I received most in the earlier purchases in their original boxes with the original packing material and an opened esd bag indicating they were tried/whatever and then returned. Of these drives, only one 2TB WD RE3/4 failed after a year in service and was replaced under warranty. The most recent batches come in a bubble wrap envelope either completely new with a sealed esd bag or no esd bag at all. I've not had any of these fail.

Generally, it seems most hard drive returns are simply because they were the wrong part for the job (size too big/small or interface sas/sata). The only thing that concerns me about the drives is the shipping--shipping to original customer and then back to CDW and then to me. But even in that scenario, it seems like it's not an issue from what I've seen.

Hope this helps. (y)

Anytime you look at the manufacturer part number and it has '-BSTK' after it, it's an outlet item--returned so could be open box, bnib, possibly missing something minor like a manual, etc. You can't get any more information on the condition online or even by calling. It's the gamble part of ordering via the outlet. But every outlet purchase has a 45-day return policy too, so not much of a fear there.

And yes, this guy is long gone because it no longer says in-stock. Once an outlet item is out of stock, it's gone. Even if you place an order, it will get cancelled at some point in time. I don't think I've ever heard of a backorder getting filled on an outlet item.

what about warranties? Are manufacture warranties still valid? Like some parts have 3 or 5 year warranty. Do manufactures still honor them?

Yep, full warranties since the products are considered new. I've warrantied a WD RE3/4 hd and am in the process of warrantying a Lacie 2TB I got recently that was acting flaky--no issues with warranties. :)

I've done the same on a video card I bought. Warranties are as if new.

So what's someone looking for? I've got to clear my head with a search for something...

Just saw this super deal on a ridiculously fast scanner that will probably drop at least one more time:
https://www.cdw.com/product/brother-ads-3600w-sf-clr-duplex-bst/5588257?pfm=srh

I just bought this exact same unit just barely over a month ago for $700+ (I even checked the outlet as well as everywhere else), and here it is for $550. This is a RIDICULOUSLY fast scanner, even at 600dpi. We got it to scan almost 16 foot long register tapes and it scans an entire tape so fast, it's like watching something in disbelief. For this thing to be this cheap, it's almost unreal for the capability of the scanner. We use it directly connected to our network (along with an HP 8500fn1 we got in the outlet cheap) and scan pdfs directly to our file server. I programmed some presets and even my senior citizen parents are even able to use it without fail. It is a great scanner for any document conversion project:

I'm really kicking myself that I couldn't buy it this cheap. :banghead: Oh well, my loss will be someone else's gain! (y)

These compact Cherry mechanical keyboards are far below their usual $70+ price at $25/ea:

I have a version of these with the trackball, and while they do not have Cherry mx switches, the ml switches they come with are quite snappy and work much better than any laptop keyboard that may have the same layout. They are perfect for needing a keyboard in a small space like a server rack or entertainment center, but are just as at home on the desktop if you like a compact layout. My fingers definitely like them as I was shocked that I typed as fast on one of these as I do on the Model M.

I actually found the trackball version that I picked up a few years ago for much cheaper than this (I think it was near the $25 mark):

Nice find! I'd love to try that trackball model (even at $40-45) to replace a POS Logitech k400 something with a track pad. It sucks donkey dick. The membrane keys are terrible, and the track pad misclicks etc.

I must be getting older cuz I'm actually really interested in that scanner lmao.

There is also a version with a trackpad, but I've never seen it in the outlet.

The trackball is a bit 'scratchy' for lack of a better word, but it tracks well without skipping--just takes a bit to get used to, like the keyboard.

Dude, that scanner will absolutely blow your mind. (y)

We actually had to scan 2 copies of the same document in a hurry earlier this week so we raced both the HP and the 3600w and the 3600w won, and it was accidentally set to double-sided. Now the back sides were blank, but that still meant that it scanned and sent a 177MB vs the HP's 148MB file faster to the file server. Now to be fair to the HP, it sends in the background so you can continue scanning vs the 3600w that has to finish sending first. But this is a minor issue as you can scan directly to usb on the 3600w and I'm sure that flies as I believe it supports usb3.0.

I should add that Brother support is surprisingly good. We couldn't get 16ft 600dpi scans to work and it took only one call to get it escalated to an engineer here in the US who worked on it with me side by side until we figured out the hard limit is actually less than that for 600dpi and that it works fine at 300dpi.

You can't go wrong with these things. We have two 2500w models each with 50k+ scans on them and they rock too even if they seem slower now. :D

I just installed a new DRUM in my Brother MFC7820N after breaking 11k pages of printing. The thing won't die :)

Any good deals on laser printers? My Dell 2825cdn is dead. Prefer not to put another laser printer on 150$ "rental".

I myself would like to pick up a decent color laser printer, and that issue with the Dell breaking just out of warranty for so many seems to be insane. I would like to get a multifunction unit that is solid but won't break in 12 months after light use ....

I am going to o wait until the fall since I need to pick up a high when Zen2 CPU and possibly 32GB of ram. Waiting to see how Zen2 does with 4 dimms and speed.

I'd take "scratchy" if it tracks accurately vs the POS that Logitech unit is. I have purchased 150 or so Logitech products and honestly it's been the first to really let me down. I did have a couple gaming mice die, but they quickly replaced them with new sealed retail units which impressed me.

My original MFC-8460N I bought in 2007 for a business venture is still on as we speak and has 63867 on the odometer. :D It worked so well we got a few more in the series and they were bought with even more pages on them and currently have 74318 and 100317 on two of them. We used them mainly for networking scanning so their adfs have even higher page counts. And to date, if we have any issues with any of the newer scanners grabbing multiple pages, we just use one of these old bad boys as their adfs were absolutely the best. (y)

Look for cheap toner in the outlet. ;) We've picked up a few that way before. Most people won't even open toner if it's the wrong one so you can even safely get cheap bnib toner on craigslist, et al. (y)

I'm sure there are. ;) You want another big bad boy mfc machine like the Dell or just a color laser to augment the Dell?

Well, I think this will tempt you to jump now for only $66:
https://www.cdw.com/product/xerox-phaser-6510-color-print-30ppm/5571966?pfm=srh

This Xerox normally goes for $170 at the cheapest anywhere you look. Even factoring in shipping, it's a solid deal for sure. (y)

And if you want even heavier duty color, this Xerox is just a bit more at $76, but far less than $300+ it usually goes for:
https://www.cdw.com/product/xerox-c400-color-printer-36ppm-bstk/5563340?pfm=srh

Canon's got some smaller less heavy duty models that fit better on a desk for $92, which is far below the $180+ that was the cheapest I could find:
https://www.cdw.com/product/canon-imageclass-lbp612cdw-color-las/5544697?pfm=srh
https://www.cdw.com/product/canon-imageclass-lbp612cdw-color-las/5544976?pfm=srh

This recertified HP color multi-function is about 1/2 off anywhere else at $94:
https://www.cdw.com/product/hp-recert-color-lj-pro-mfp-m180nw-b/5566862?pfm=srh

Personally, I hate the new HP laser printers with their gimmicky paper tray that's just like an inkjet. If I'm buying a laser, I don't want any crappy inkjet parts in it. But they still feel sturdy and won't compromise on the HP laser printing quality--that's what they were known for after all.

Here's a solid Brother color laser for $132 that's far less than the $300+ these normally go for:
https://www.cdw.com/product/brother-color-laser-printer-33ppm-b/5541664?pfm=srh

Canon's got a color multi-function for $150 that's almost half the going price of just under $300:
https://www.cdw.com/product/canon-mf731cw-color-laser-mfp-28ppm/5571798?pfm=srh
https://www.cdw.com/product/canon-mf731cw-color-laser-mfp-28ppm/5571800?pfm=srh

Another similar Canon model for $164 that's normally around the same $300 price tag:
https://www.cdw.com/product/canon-mf634cdw-color-laser-mfp-14ppm/5557544?pfm=srh

Ahhh, so I found it--THE deal. Xerox color multifunction for $190 that's normally $500+ anywhere--I even saw an ebay listing for a used one for $600+:
https://www.cdw.com/product/xerox-c405-color-laser-mfp-36ppm-bs/5557696?pfm=srh
https://www.cdw.com/product/xerox-c405-color-laser-mfp-36ppm-bs/5557882?pfm=srh

There's quite a few deals that are up in the $300+ range too for machines that would cost much more, but I'm going to stop here for now and just leave a link to the search that led me to all these deals. ;)
https://www.cdw.com/search/?key=las...sr=1&sortby=priceasc&maxrecords=72&pcurrent=1

It's actually very accurate. I find that I barely have to move it for it to do exactly what I want. :) The trackball buttons aren't the best, but you get used to them. :)

Printer $100... toner $1,000,005.00

(lasers have become the new inkjets)

I like this deal. Does it include toner, though? After getting burned on all in ones, I think I would prefer some some modularity anyway. At 56$, that's a pretty good deal for a color laser printer (at least that's what I think this is?). I'd prefer not to buy the toner though, as that could be very expensive. I don't print much anyway, and only got the Dell because it was a really good value (and I would have still considered it that, if it didn't just up and die on me mysteriously right out of warranty).

I've had a 6520DN for years and have been happily feeding it generic cartridges at $10-14 each. (Edit: last 3 color set was $20 actually). Pretty sure they are the same ones for the 6510.

The only way to know what's coming with this one is to call and ask.

Printer $100... toner $1,000,005.00

(lasers have become the new inkjets)
Not really. Toner prices have always been high because you can use a single toner cartridge for a decade (or more) in a home environment. On my personal Brother laser I didn't even use up the starter toner until after a year and a half. And the one in there has already lasted over 2 years, and probably will last another 2 at least.

The thing that's changed is that there are now some 'entry level' lasers out there like the current HP office series (they call their much more robust series 'enterprise' now, and they cost 2x as much), and brother has always been on the more price conscious end of the spectrum where the msrp for certain units was only $100. This is a stark contrast to when lasers couldn't be touched for under $500 because companies didn't think to compete with the crappy inkjets. Inkjet ink shenanigans is actually what drove more people to laser than a problem with the inkjet technology.

Toner however, hasn't dropped in price because it doesn't need to. A lot of times the same cartridge works for many applications, and most of those are businesses that print 50-100 sheets a day minimum, so a 3000 page cartridge doesn't last long and 5000 and 7000 page variants are available as well. (I always grab an extra capacity one on sale if I need one.) And since the same cartridges may last a decade or more in the home environment, it seems expensive until you figure the life expectancy--most printers will outlive the computers that print to them! (Case in point are all the lasers from the past that I still have around including our very first--the Panasonic KXP-4450i that cost us $1100 and was a whopping 11ppm in the days when 8ppm was fast.)

How often do prices drop on outlet products?
They usually drop on a weekly basis, but it varies based on the time the product entered the outlet. I usually watch an item daily until it hits the price I want or disappears.

Most printers will come with a 'starter toner' that can last a few hundred pages if not more. If your printing needs are light, you might be surprised how long the starter toner lasts, and being color, I bet you wouldn't have to change them all at once so the cost hit wouldn't come all at once anyways.

The only way to know what's coming with this one is to call and ask.
It definitely doesn't hurt to call and ask what's in the box. Sometimes the reps can get someone at the warehouse to check it out, sometimes even they'll miss something, so there is the return policy in case you don't like it.

It's on Amazon as well and per the Q&A section looks like it comes with toner:
https://www.amazon.com/Xerox-Phaser-6510-DN-Printer/dp/B01MFHAI41

I think I'll just chance it... tomorrow lol.
I was just looking again at the listing and it's a pretty awesome piece of equipment that comes with on-site warranty and there's even a rebate.

The only thing I noticed that might be of some concern is that it weighs 66 lbs, so there's potential for it to arrive damaged. If your delivery guy doesn't just drop it off and run to the next stop, see if you can open it there and inspect for damage on the spot and refuse it if it's messed up. That will save you from a nightmare damage claim like I've got going on for a few months now. I'm out quite a bit until CDW gets their act together and takes care of it. Just a word of caution as I'd hate for you to be in the same situation.

No delivery driver hangs around and waits for you to inspect something. Like you said they just drop it off and move on most the time.

Someone earlier in this thread has a good enough relationship with theirs that they will. I also had the same experience when I owned an auto parts distribution company and saw my UPS guy daily. (y)

I wonder if I could force them to make it signed. That way they literally can't just drop it off. They'd need my signature. At 55$ this was a great deal, but the shipping is going to be like 26$ for it. Which is still good when considering it's a laser color printer... but makes it a tad more lukewarm if I consider the (seemingly middling to high) possibility of it arriving damaged and consider the stuff you're going through at the moment. Hm.

You can! UPS has an option that's only like a $1-3 for signature required. The agent should be able to do that.

Came to 89$ total after tax and shipping. I billed it on my credit card. If it comes in messed up or something, I'll probably do a chargeback if they don't take care of me.
