why? 300GB of data is 300GB of data. why would they not use the term?

At least they didn't say gibibytes, right?
you guys are confusing storage capacity with the terminology. 300GB was 300GB 20 years ago and will be 400 from now. its not like she was transferring his 64K/360fps holographic porn...
not when you are talking hi res raw pics and your 4k porn stash but 300GB is a shit tonne of text, pdfs and stuff like that "data". they didnt say what the data was and the 300GB seemed fine to me. like i said before, it's written for normies. In "The Measure of a Man", a Starfleet judge rules that Data is not Starfleet property. The episode establishes that Data has a storage capacity of 800 quadrillion bits (1000 TB or 909 TiB) and a total linear computational speed of 60 trillion operations per second (60 THz). Doesn't seem as impressive as it did when the episode aired in 1989.
It is just disconnecting to me from the future feeling when I dont even consider 300GB to be a significant amount of data to move through my network at home.

that i agree with. For me it is kinda like when they use current slang in future stuff. Pulls me out.
it depends on what the data is though. research papers/info that is mostly text wouldnt take up more space. maybe compression it 400 years is really really really good.I so cringed when I heard 300GB. Quads man, quads. Even if you make the argument 300GB is what they meant, it doesn't make sense. 300GB of data 400 years in the future is going to be a pointless unit to even consider measuring data in.
I didn't like the BS about regenerative soil or the oh so convenient story of their dead son who just happened to need a positronic matrix as a cure but oh noes the ban on synthetics!
I dont get the hate on the 300GB, though i agree it should've been something like "you then transferred a number of files". We still use SI units centuries after their creation. And aren't bytes hardware dependent anyways?
Also, I realize marina sirtis got old but holy shit what happened to her voice?
Why wouldn't he sound different when he's playing a different character.Picard doesn't sound like his old self either... I guess he could be acting like a frail, raspy-sounding old man (I think I've even seen his hand tremble in an episode), or just age does that to a person.

Riker sounds about the same, but I think the actor played the trombone for a number of years, so maybe that has helped him
It was more a joke, but the truth is he's playing a similar, not the same character. Different Star Trek license than the TNG.what? he is playing the same character.

It is a different license. The remerger took place later, not that it would necessitate an original license anyway. It's not a different license. There are no different licenses for Trek anymore. All of Trek is owned by ViacomCBS.
The remerger doesn't change anything for shows already in production, and I bet any future shows will be made under the alternative license as well. It's not a different license. There are no different licenses for Trek anymore. All of Trek is owned by ViacomCBS.
In the 1995 movie johnny Mnemonic, which takes place in the future (2021) 80 gigs was too much data for Johnny to hold. This is silly now as we can easily store that amount of data on a thumb drive, and we have been able to for some time.why? 300GB of data is 300GB of data. why would they not use the term?

I just realized the latest episode already aired and I forgot because that's how memorable this show is.
The last two are at least entertaining.
Yes, but the reason that '300GB' isn't out of place is that they're talking about the size of the data itself, not the capacity of the storage device. In the 1995 movie johnny Mnemonic, which takes place in the future (2021) 80 gigs was too much data for Johnny to hold. and thats the point i was trying to make.Yes, but the reason that '300GB' isn't out of place is that they're talking about the size of the data itself, not the capacity of the storage device.
I can readily get 256GB of capacity in the size of a fingernail, and yet documents that contain only text still take up just a handful of kilobytes. Image and video compression has reduced file sizes over time.
Her storage device might have been able to hold 256EB for all we know.

exactly, its a term that normies will understand.t's like they stuck 300 GB in there just because it sounded like a large number to the writer.

lots and especially so with the new audience they are trying to attract and failing at...What % do you think of ST fans are normies though? Prob not many even w/this "new" Trek.
Just watched episode 8. Kind of ties things together. Got to watch until the end now.
