The Nevada Gaming Control Board has warned casinos about a new card counting app for the iPhone. For only $0.99 you too can become a felon and have your ass kicked by casino security!

Nevada gambling regulators have warned casinos in the state about a card-counting program that works on Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPod Touch that illegally helps players beat the house in blackjack.

I never understood why card counting was illegal.

It's not illegal. Using a computer device to count cards for you is illegal.

However, the casino's have the right to deny access to anyone they want for any reason, including card counting.

I never understood why card counting was illegal.

It isn't...if you can do it in your head. It is the electronic device that makes it illegal.

Having said that, I lived in Vegas most of my life, a casino that suspects you of card counting will approach you with a mob of security and politely ask you to leave the property. If you come back you will be stopped by security immediately.

In the old days, they would kick your ass. Normally you wouldn't go back ;)

Yeah a casino is a private business. As long as they are not breaking any laws (human rights, banning based on sex, religion, race, ect...) they can block anyone from being on their premises.

Granted, using a electronic device or not, I do not see what is wrong with card counting.

Fixed.

Card games are a game of skill, not who has the better calculator. You take all the skill out of the game when you have a computer giving you the moves.

Card counting is NOT illegal if you use your head, card counting IS illegal if you use a device to cheat.

Think of it as a math test for an entrance exam, using a calculator/computer is prohibited while using your brain is not... same concept.

They will kick you out because if you count cards, over time you will ALWAYS win money.

I don't think casinos like that :)

actually, Nothing makes it illegal. It's not illegal, the casinos would just like you to think it is.

Not true. You can count cards, read the rules next time at the casinos.

If you read the article, it's actually a federal crime. So go ahead :p

The CT casino's.. Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, are a different story. Since reservations count as self governing bodies, they can make it illegal, and not allow anyone guilty of it onto the reservation.

Grasping straws? Reservations have their own rules yes, but the federal law supersedes all rules and laws reservations have.

You can't talk on the phone while sitting at a table so why should you be able to use it at all while sitting at the table. Put your phone away...you're gambling

I thought many, if not all, table games don't allow cell phones onto the table? Why would this be a problem then?

I know in all those poker tournaments, you see people with MP3 players listening on headphones all the time. I could see a person using their iPhone like that, with it in their pocket. Maybe the app sends audio clues when the cards are favorable and unfavorable. You just have your hand in your pocket, clicking + or - depending on the cards.

Phones are already BANNED "at the tables" in all casinos. Get a call, get up and answer it, need to make a call, get up and make it.

Card counting IS illegal in NewJersey, an actual crime. Not in Nevada or CT, etc. But at Foxwoods/MSun, with 8-10 deck shoes with 1/2 way shuffle, counting is virtually pointless even if you were a savant.

There is still two-deck blackjack in Vegas, that a card counter can wreck, of course it is easily notice and you'll get tossed out for doing it.

Stick to POKER, where skillz can give you a much more significant edge than the at best 53-47 edge of the most hospitable blackjack game you could find.

Now, to put to sleep forever those christian rightwing scumbags like Sen Kyl who've made POKER illegal on the net. Let Vegas and the NGC run it and keep it legal and Vegas could make $billions worldwide.... especially since the outing of the rigging scandels at some of the most popular "high quality" sites.

I knew one highly advertized site was rigged just after it came out of beta. Some idiot in a $1 NoLimit game called a $45 preflop raise, and acts first going allin for $300 against me on the flop, flop was QJ6 rainbow, he had T2o, and I had AA. Turn was 2, river was a T. I saw the same guy doing the same over and over and winning for weeks. Turns out he was one of the managers and knew what cards were coming.

Vegas though by buying Kyl and his ilk, they could "stop" the internet gaming, instead all they did was cut themselves out of $Billions and create a monster.

Word to the christian right cocksuckers... where in the bible (either version) is GAMBLING called a sin and forbidden? Other than "anything fun is bad" there is no mention of it.

You just trolled this into a thread of religion vs gambling destined for genmay.....GG

That's not true. It skews the odds in your favor, but even the best counting systems still give you a 1 in 3ish chance of going bust before doubling your money.

I thought Indian reservations were like sovereign nations.....i thought the feds cant go on that land with out permission.

Criminal and gambling federal/state laws still supersede tribal law.

Seminole Tribe vs. Butterworth (1979) and California vs. Cabazon Band (1987) pretty much solved that issue.

You are correct, there is no mention of gambling in the Bible. The "Christian Right Cocksuckers" don't believe anyone should be allowed to do anything that they might abuse. Alcohol is bad because you might be an alcoholic. Drugs are bad because you might become dependent. Gambling is bad because you might become greedy or learn to love money too much. Sex is bad because... well.. I'm not sure. But it's so bad.

Back on topic, regarding card counting, it is a waste of time. Try out poker, if you're any good at it you can supplement your income rather decently. Just don't get greedy.

I'm posting this from within a Vegas strip casino. Card counting is not illegal, just frowned upon (they tend to ask people to leave). Using a device is what makes it illegal.

And this serves no practical purpose. You can't use your phone at the table and your wingman punching in the cards behind you would be deadly obvious to the cameras above.

My mom's BF got banned from a casino years ago (might have been Caesar's), because they thought he was counting cards. I think the casinos just want to get rid of those who cut their bottom lines, illegal methods or not. It seems they don't care these days about him, the last time he won anything substantial was about 5 years ago, an $80-125k BJ tournament at the defunct Stardust. I shudder to think of how much he's lost in that time. Gambling losses write-off FTW!

I agree with the counting in your head argument, as long as you're using your noggin and not a device, electronic or otherwise, I don't see the issue. But ultimately, if they don't want you there, they have every right to 86 you.

False, it's bad when you let it take advantage of you. aka. Addictions.

That's what I said. :D

A prosecutor who can win that case is pure ace in my book. There's not a rats chance in hell to 'prove' what someone was thinking in their head. Sure you can show this guys was winning an abnormal quantity of hands, but that doesn't prove he was doing the math in his head. It's simply not possible.

Your brain is more powerfull than a computer and we all have brains!
SO if I was taking notes of cards being played on paper would I be asked to leave

If someone can get away with it,more power to them.Casinos are one business I have no pity for. They make a living ripping people off,the odds are always overwhelmingly in their favor.

I think it betters your chances of winning, but you won't "always" win. Casinos are doing things that make it difficult for the advantage blackjack player, such as earlier shuffles, more decks of cards, automated shuffling machines.

Of course if you aren't smart enough to count cards properly (improper counting means you're wasting your time) then may as well use progressions. :p

Oh man. Blackjack is in trouble when ubiquitous computing gets on its way. Gonna have to ban people with glasses and check eyeballs for computers

Naw, they'll just stop black jack. Or just make you play in a EMI field. :p

They should stop black jack today if they are gonna bitch about card counting... or go with enough decks so that it doesn't matter.

So you're telling me the North Stonington police are the ones who enforce the laws for another jurisdiction? Yes they tax things differently, but they're still playing the game by paying off the CT government ~1% of slot revenue. Same crooks, different rules.
