Well this case just keeps getting weirder all the time. How would you like to have a computer forensic expert digging around on your computer? Who cares about finding "factual inaccuracies" on his computer? Enquiring minds want to know what's in his porn folder (maybe not).

Thursday, a judge ordered a court-appointed computer forensic expert to detail to ZeniMax the findings, which led that expert to say that he discovered evidence on John Carmack's computer that shows that “statements and representations that have been sworn to and are before the court are factually inaccurate.” He also found information that proved “opinions expressed in expert reports that are before the court that are demonstrably inaccurate."

So there's someone out there who can actually decipher half the shit Carmack is talking about when he speaks or writes? Impressive...... As for "Doesn't Sound Good For Oculus" = Facebook owns them. Facebook has more money than you could possibly imagine, and the ability to get more money at the drop of a hat. FB will drag this out in court until such time as they have no choice but to settle, at which point a huge check will get written and by that time nobody will give a crap....as if they give a crap now.

But that isn't how perjury works. If everyone at the top at Oculus lied under oath it doesn't matter who owns them. It is still the people that lied that are going to be brought up on perjury charges, not Facebook as they didn't go before the court and promise to tell the truth. FB can drag the rest of the case out, but the perjury changes can still be brought up against everyone right away.

I just don't see criminal charges being brought here, because Zenimax is out to get royalty checks. I've signed the same agreements when being hired in the past..."If you think it up while you work for us, we own it" contracts and such, but Carmack was always an alpha-nerd, I'm guessing he'll be able to put up a plausible argument.

Or, he's busted. One or the other :)

Hopefully this doesn't spell too much trouble for Carmack. Can't see him holding up well sharing cells with Bloods and Crips.

Carmack hard drive contains proof of factual inaccuracies in Oculus lawsuit, expert says

found the article. Doesn't sound good for Oculus. Too bad they didn't give more info.

Honestly I still think it's loads of bullshit. What I imagine Zenimax is doing here is claiming a form of "expected value". If Carmack ever wrote one line of code after hours on his work PC while goofing around with VR then they are retroactively trying to claim losses on what could have been theirs if he had developed the whole thing under their roof and on their budget. They're looking at the last 3 years after he left and trying to claim all of that as theirs even long after he was working with Oculus directly.

I know he wasnt working for years on this at Zenimax because I remember the first cardboard VR kits Palmer designed and how he was excited to get it into the hands of developers like Carmack. During that time was when Carmack was exiting iD to work for Oculus, he had literally just got his hands on one of these things and told Palmer he was interested in working further to develop it with his talent. Before there was any SDK or anything at all I think Carmack wrote a quick hack for Doom3 as a test to see how it would look in VR, and he did that while at iD. Right after that I think he was so convinced in VR that he left the company to work for Oculus. Zenimax is just doing the classic Silicon Valley bullshit of trying to claim everything he's worked on since then and acting like that is part of their "losses" if they dont get it.

This is just corporate bullshit. Zenimax is trying to claim that everything Carmack worked on while in their employ (even projects he took on in his spare time) belong to them. If Armadillo Aerospace had become SpaceX I have no doubt they'd be claiming they owned part of that too. I can't imagine that someone as smart as Carmack would sign a contract giving corporate overlords the rights to every random idea that fell out of his brain. Zenimax got surprised how quickly VR got good and now they want a piece of it retroactively and they think Carmack is their way in. Carmack had the vision to see what VR could some day be and the company he used to work for didn't, so he left to join a company whose vision aligned with his own. Now his former employer is butt hurt and litigating because of it.

Quite possibly not good for Facebook and Oculus.

Texas is a common place for patent trolls to get their way. Not that Zenimax is a patent troll in this case, but that the court system may favor them before they even enter the court room.

How do you NOT carry over experience from one company to the next... I get that he was wrong to use the computers, but it sounds like they are just sore losers grasping at a piece of the VR pie... Just be happy you got rid of Carmack and Doom was a success, maybe create a partnership with Oculus/Facebook to continue your so-called "experience" with VR development... ffs grown ups can be such babies...

Ok, I made one reply and deleted it. I can't go into details but you guys are wrong. Just wait, you'll see.

That's all I can say about that right now.

You sure about that?

am I thie only one that hopes it goes badly, just to see Carmack go back to making games, possibly with Romero... #MakeGamesGreatAgain

I think he'd go back to making rocket ships in a bid to make it to Mars with Musk.

Something tells me Carmack's going to spend the next 10 years in a turkish high secularity prison.

Update: Oculus representatives did reach out today to as they "wanted to provide you our on-the-record statement and request that you update your article to include it. Can you let me know?"

“We're eager to present our case in court. Oculus and its founders have invested a wealth of time and money in VR because we believe it can fundamentally transform the way people interact and communicate. We're disappointed that another company is using wasteful litigation to attempt to take credit for technology that it did not have the vision, expertise, or patience to build.” – Oculus spokesperson

Now to find this anonymous "Oculus spokesperson" in the hallowed halls of the Federal Court building here in North Texas.

Perjury is perjury. Doesn't matter who does that. If you lie in court and there is a proof of this, you should go to jail. This is how law should work. Period.

What I find hard to believe is that Carmack wasn't being logged, shadowed, or had his access cut off to top security data days/weeks before his end date. And not that it really matters much since he is walking out with all that shit already in his head. Who the hell are they kidding?
