can't play wmv's...black screen (audio, no video)

weirdest thing...i can't play wmv videos. i just get a black screen with audio (no video)

i installed one of those codec packs that was working great until this...i've heard some issues so i uninstalled it. still, doesn't work though.

any ideas? any way I can check to see what i am missing? unfortunately the slick the GSpot utility can't check WMV files.

what happened?

ive tried the XP codec pack and the k-lite codec pack. i could try this one but i don't think it will fix my problem.

the weird thing is that i JUST was playing video files. didn't install anything and bam, this is happening. very weird stuff.

also, this is a basic wmv file...i shouldn't even need a codec pack! =) since i have WMP10 loaded and fully updated

That does sound strange, try the different codec packs or try rolling back to a previous save point before when the video was still working.

Edit: I meant restore point.

Yea, i understand that you have tried many codec packs, but I have used many codec packs that just arent complete...the one I linked has never not worked for me.

If that doesnt work, try the VLC player...it seems to be able to play just about anything.

i used Sherlock to see what codec's i had installed and I definitely have all of them. I think there is some sort of confliction because I have dual entries of the same codec. can someone run sherlock and see what's missing or what is messed up with mine? Thanks!

VLC doesn't play all WMVs. I use it on a Mac to play all video but some WMVs that I download play a black screen (sometimes jumbled) with no audio. I think for VLC to play WMVs they have to be 9 and under.

yeah, i don't think it's the player because i tried windows media player and windows media player classic.

it's just a simple wmv so somehow something got conflicted i just don't know how or what...

hmm, i had a similiar problem

if its an ati card, try turning off hardware video acceleration or whatever that option is....wmv video acceleration, something like that, it messed up all my WMV files, but every other file worked fine, and your right u dont need a codec for WMV, its playable right after a windows install with windows media player....

Wow. you are spot on. i clicked down the hardware accel slider to the 3rd position and it the video fired right up! the weird part is why did this JUST start happening? i was working fine for two months.

does this setting hurt me in games, normal use, etc? it's so weird...i've never heard of this before. thankfully i am upgrading to a 7900gtx this weekend. =)

as far as ive noticed it doesnt hurt any gaming....i think its wmv acceleration...which to me, means it applies only to video...

heh, its funny i read this, and started to read ppls suggestions after the 3rd post i said meh im not readin i think i know this one.....heh, glad to help!

but its funny how it just started happening.....i had it back in the old catalyst drivers, and since like 6.1 it hasnt been happening to me...the old 5 series did it though

i re read it and saw u lowered hardware acceleration....no thats not the setting i was talkin about...its somewhere in the ati control panel or control center, its called enable/disable WMV Acceleration...im pretty sure thats the setting...but yea if ur takin hardware acceleration down, then yes im prtetty sure its goin to hurt game performance

hmm...i was messing with display properties, settings, advanced, troubleshoot. hardware accel. not good, huh? well, it's interesting that moving that down fixed my problem...does that tell me something else?

i never install the ATI control panel so I don't know if i can get into the ati settings.

yeah...i don;t have the ati tray tools. to be honest, i don't care if it's just my ati card but what i'm worried about is that it is my platform and that a new vid card won't fix it.

is there any way to see where that tray icon is? can't seem to find it...not in program files, all programs, system tray, etc.

Does you system think that you have dual displays hooked up? It sounds like the system thinks it has two displays and the wrong one is set as the primary. When this happens the video overlay used by the hardware accell only displays on the one set as primary. Thus you get a black window with no errors but cant see the video. And that would also explain why turning the hardware accell off seems to fix it. Just my two cent guess.

There are other reasons why video overlay problems can occur, but I think you're in the ballpark.

I just recently discovered this myself. I had to help a person set up thier laptop to display on a projector and couldn't figure out why the video would display on the laptop and not the projector. I ended up just diabling the LCD and only using the projector. I'll try turning off accelleration next time.

im having the same issue, unable to view wmv videos. it opens to a black screen, but plays audio. We've downloaded all windows updates and loaded windows media player 11.

we've tried vlc viewer and Divx, both opening to black windows.

she has a new pc w/ two monitors, any other suggestions?

can't play wmv's...black screen (audio, no video)
