I know you can use Google voice for voicemail without having a special Google phone number. I am wondering if you can send text messages without getting one of there phone numbers?

Google Voice always uses a number, thats how the system works. You don't have to use that number directly to use it for voicemail but it still routes your calls through that number and then into your Google Voice App. The same way your carrier forwards missed calls to a phone #, your GV # simply takes the place of that number.

If you use GV to send a text it will send it as the GV number, not the one from your cell phone. Same as if you made a call through GV it would show your specific GV number as the caller.

So you are saying the text messaging part can use the 'dummy number' for text messages? I am asking because I signed up for a real Google phone number to be able to text but it sounds like I really didn't need to. I just want to know for sure.
