can u play hl2 without dvd in the dvd drive?

i dont have it, but from what i heard, once its downloaded the dvd isnt necessary

You got the retail version ?

Steam version doesn't require the DVD be in the drive.

Hah, everyone complains that steam sucks because they don't get a hardcopy of the game, and now people are complaining that they actually have to use the dvd. Priceless.

Hmmm, I bought the retail version because I didn't want to download 4gigs of data, not because of the hard copy. I'm hoping it's a config problem somewhere as there is a solution posted at steampowered.com but it doesn't work for me
