in the stupid stellar phoenix, the target drive has to be bigger than the source. I want a disk cloning s/w that doesn't care whether my target drive is bigger or smaller

After going through this myself upgrading a laptop with a SSD, the most effective tool I used was using a gparted live cd on a different PC. Apparently using a disk with the same MBR signature as the boot drive is not a good thing. :D

why bother w/ gparted live cd? Why not just use Macrium Reflect?

Meeho, thanks very much for the link, looks like a great software, far better than stellar phoenix disk clone utility
