I have a cable modem connected directly to my computer. I was wondering if I could add a usb wireless adapter to the computer, and either set it as an access point, or share the internet across it? I have a laptop that has wireless built in and would like to access the internet wirelessly, without getting a router if possible.

Thanks for any info!

Well if you can't put it into BSS mode, user level cards and such should support Ad-hoc mode... think of it as the wireless equivlent of using a crossover cable.

The first time I used wireless it was Ad-hoc mode between 2 laptops and it worked very well (I was happy to because I just came in and did it and everyone else in the class I was toutoring had to do it as in assimeng and it took them all day)

with adhoc mode, would I be able to control who can access it and who cannot? There will be many computers in my area that have wireless built in, but I want to allow only MY laptop to access it.
