I'm a little low on ethernet cables, can I use a crossover cable to connect one of my machines to a switch instead of a regular cable?

Auto MDI/MDI-X makes the whole crossover/straight-through obsolete to the extent of my knowledge. Of course, both endpoints of a cable have to support it, at least I think it works that way.

Not all people have hardware that supports it, though. All gigabit equipment does, but there aren't that many networks that are fully gigabit, so, there is still a need for a crossover cable. But, like YeOlde said, you can use the uplink port or an autosensing uplink port on a new switch, and use a crossover. Also, only one endpoint has to support AutoMDIX, as far as I know.
