Can 9800GT handle CS:S at 2560 1600?

Thanks, my cpu is a Q6600. What about the younger brother 9600GT OC? I just want the cheapest card that could handle the highest resolution and highest settings for CS:S.
 
whats your budget? other than as little as possible? The 4830 and 4770 does better than the 9800gt on just about everything else and is cheaper than most 9800gt's. But I wouldnt try much else at that res with that card.
 
Budget is $70. I usually don't play games and if I do is only CS 1.6 or Source (couple hours a week) so I don't feel like spending a lot of money on it.

Dell has 9800Gt right now for about $70 and 9600Gt for $50.
 
You have a $1000+ monitor and are getting a $70 video card?

Just weird logic ;)
 
A $60 4670 is enough for CS:S. ATI usually does a bit better than Nvidia for Source games. A 9800 GT would work as well, but for $100 there isn't any reason to get a 9800 GT over a 4850 which is faster and can be had for $85 AR.

I used to play CS:S on my 6600GT comfortably at 1152x864 with 2xAA = about 1 million pixels.

You want to play at 2560x1600, which is about 4 million pixels. Speedup required = 4x.

Just from experience:

My last card was a 7900GT, and it was about 3x faster than the 6600GT.

The 8800GT is roughly twice the speed of a 7900GT, so the total speedup is 6x. I think the 8800GT's 6x speedup can handle a 4x increase in resolution, and even leaves you room for high AA settings.

I'm not sure it's that linear, but good effort.

Yes OP....without issue or fail. I have a MSI 9800 at 660/1900 and it handles L4D/TF2 (source engines) @ 1920x1200 with 4x/16x around 60-80FPS with my 8400. I've found those to games with their "tweaks" to be more demanding than CS:S or HL.
 
You need to take into consideration that Valve is currently working on porting CS:S to the Source2007-08 engine (also knows as the Orange Box engine), and there may be some graphical enhancements which will come along with it.

Secondly over the years the requirements for CS:S have increased due to update patches from Valve, those of you who haven't played the game in years should not use your memories as a baseline.

Thirdly CS:S (and most source engine games) are heavily CPU dependent, in many cases people do not see an FPS increase when upgrading their video card because they didn't realize they were CPU limited. In your case though at that extreme resolution with high AA and AF your bottleneck may not be your CPU but your GPU (as CS:S does not atm support multiple cores, but will after the port to the new engine)

Finally don't get your hopes up on when the game will support multiple cores, Valve promised the update would be released in 4th quarter 2007 lol.

Really with that monitor you should get the best card you can for the amount you can spend, don't just look at the requirements of a game whose requirements keep changing every year.
 
FWIW I've had source run on my 8800GS @ 2560x1600 and it runs just fine, granted I do have alot of cpu power behind it as well.
