California Lawmaker Wants to Move toward E-receipts

Politicians make new laws because they think that if they don't, they're not being effective.

In a world of Nopes, we need more Swansons.

Better yet, why not just make everything free? No need to pay, no need for a receipt. Gotta love California's politicians' take on things:

This makes sense, California doesn't have a lot of trees left to make the paper for the receipts....

What doesn't make sense, its to print a larger piece of paper out of a printer rather than have a small one if you need a physical receipt.

A very common scam going on right now is at places like Wal*mart. If a customer doesn't request cash back and is using a card to pay, the cashier will tack on a cash back and pocket the money. I'd say "check your receipts", but apparently you won't be able to do this (maybe) in CA.

How am I supposed to be able to tell if I'm being overcharged if I don't receive a paper receipt where I can check the prices I was charged?

I usually find that I've been over charged at least once a month.
It's usually at a grocery store, with all their 3 for $5, by one get one free, etc. deals.
Either something is mispriced, or they don't give me the "deal" because something wasn't entered into the computer correctly.

I usually know about how much the bill should be (I keep a running total in my head while I shop), and if the price at the register is off from what I think it should be I look over the receipt to see if they over charged me or if I added wrong.

Guess the state government want to make it easier for stores to rip off customers.

I think it could be done in a way it makes all parties happy ( no saying it will happen that way but its possible) pass a law and funding for an entity that can collect your receipts, privately, not selling info.. so on.. for the people using this is opional.. for the vendors or a certain size, they must provide electronic reciepts, then simply have vendors do the electronic unless the person asks them not to.
Most people will go electronic, i know i would as it would centralize things and keep them there for returns, warranty or even itemizing tax returns if I wanted to. Everybody else can do whatever they want, paper, or no reciepts whatever.

It's amazing the amount of government control people are willing to accept in order to live in nice weather.

Government control? Lol

There are thousands of legitimate reasons to worry about that. This isn't one of them. Put the gun away, Billy Bob

I think you're missing the point that Californistan thinks they can legislate the shit out of everything and make the world a better, happier, healthier, place at the expense of absurdly high taxes and less freedom.

I'm not in favor of any gubment getting involved with this, but the 12 footlong sheet of printed coupons I get from CVS after buying a pack of gum is a little ridiculous.

California: the state which wanted to take control of the thermostat in your home. No surprise.

It's all about control.

Most homes in California have electrical meters that track usage by time of day.
A few years ago there was a program, that would give you a cash back incentive if you lowered your normal electric usage when they called a power emergency (we no longer have enough generating capacity to meet air conditioner demands on really hot days, and there are no plans to build more power plants). So, since the wife/kid was at home during the day, I'd have her lower the thermostat in the morning to cool the house, and then raise the setting during the afternoon. This would result in less power usage during the critical afternoon time. Usually resulted in a $20-$30 savings on hot summer months.

That program was dropped. Now you ether have to give them access to your thermostat, or allow them to put a shutoff box on your air conditioner.
No thanks. I'm not letting them turn off my air conditioning on a day when I really need it.
Now we just run it when we need it, even if there is a power emergency. Don't care any more.

Oh look another bit of legislation using the guise of "Environmentalism" and "Hazardous to your health".

At some point, people need to understand that when someone starts spouting this nonsense in relation to a "new law" its never anything good. This jalopy probably is friends with, or is co-owner or has a stake in a startup company that processes e-receipts for a "nominal fee, less than paper".

Laws were never meant to push an agenda, but this one, and many others like it get pushed on us every day without our consent.

If you want to see a huge steaming example of "Agenda Laws", go take a gander at all the laws regarding child safety seats over the last 20 years. The most recent one puts the age limit at 8. Give it another 10 more years, and under-sized adults will be required by law to use a "Safety Seat". It has nothing to do with "Safety" at all, and everything to do with turning child safety seats into disposable objects that you have to re-buy every 2 years. Last I checked, safe driving practices and not getting into an accident in the first place was a better safety method than strapping your child in and forgetting about the rest... but hey, we "dumb" folk gotta keep the chilluns safe right?

the one thing is,

i dont want to give my email to EVERY SINGLE retail location i go to. supermarket, gas station, etc etc etc.
That's what makes me think this is actually a cleverly disguised push by retailers to get a virtual cornucopia of sellable information, namely emails, very similar to the whole "bag tax" which was pushed forward by supermarkets so they wont seem like assholes for charging for a bag. But all sold under the guise of environmentalism, but stores keep 100% of the bag fees and dont pay into any fund that does anything

Look at this boomer that doesn't have a smart phone.

Why does everything need a receipt?

I would be fine just being asked everywhere if I want a receipt. Not I don't need one for coffee or fast food or whatever I get at the gas station. And why is it when I get something at retail it is like a mile long strip of paper? These just always end up blowing around parking lots anyways.

But no, they don't need my email either. I don't mind typing it in on a website but hate verbally telling people anything because you have to spell it out and it just takes more time.

I hate paper receipts. I throw them out on the trash can by the door if I will never need them.
This is a great law and hope it passes.

I wonder how Fry's will deal with this since they are all over CA. Do they still have the door nazi's checking receipts before you can leave? Its been awhile since I've been to one in CA or OR. Same with Costco.

With big ticket items at Best Buy if you get an email receipt only it gets forwarded to the guy at the door and he can see it on his little palm pilot.

In all fairness they are talking about some sort of e-receipt. So, now standing in line will take even longer as people wait patiently for their e-receipt.

Another problem with this whole "e" everything plan, is that it disenfranchises the lower classes. So if you're not able to be "connected" full time, say you're in a class lower than Undocument Friend of California, or worse, less than California College Graduate, you may not be able to get a receipt at all.

The law is silly. Won't pass.

You must be one of those gun toting rednecks.
Fracking deplorables!;)

You don't need to give them your phone number and if you haven't setup an alternate email that is only used for this purpose by now, I mean I don't know what to tell you. The thermal paper thing has been a thing for a couple decades now, you are beating a dead horse if you think regular ink is ever coming back. There is literally no situation that a paper receipt is better anymore..mostly due to the aforementioned thermal paper nonsense.

See the above.

Step 1) Create a freemail account using junk information.
Step 2) optional Forward said email account to your regular email and setup filtering options to put all mails from that account in a specific folder.
Step 3) Profit

Congrats! you can now get digital receipts without giving away any personal information!

How do I check my receipt immediately to make sure I am not overcharged???? Oh that's right I cannot. Why should I have to set up a junk email address, (I already have one), just to view my receipt. More BS. Oh what about rebates? Need an original receipt. Oh what if I do find an error so now I use an 8x11 piece of paper to print out a tiny receipt. Digital receipts should be an option only. What will they do if you decide you do not want internet access?? Force you to get internet access so you can have a digital receipt? This is wrong on all fronts and people need to open their eyes and see it. It is a method used to track you further, but this time the government will be involved. WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE!!!

Generally, the only time I'd want a receipt is if it's an item I might need to return later. If it's for fast food or Starbucks or something, I don't see any reason to ever get a receipt. I guess the one exception would be if you were travelling for work and needed them for expense reimbursement.

This assumes that everybody has a computer and Internet. Is California going to pay for both for me? There are some people that don't have either.

I hope someone comes out with the numbers that show how ridiculous this is much like the straw ban where you found out it comprises .001% of all plastic thrown out and the U.S. comprises less than 5% of all plastic that makes it into the oceans. Maybe this one will reach .05% of all paper waste, not to mention paper being biodegradable.

What's next, California? Taxing toilet paper? 55 sheets per household per day? Combine that with water restrictions then not only can you make the state a shithole to live in, you can make it smell like one.

Edit: Let me be clear though that living in the U.S. is still preferable to any other country imo and we have a lonng way to go before our standard of living takes a serious turn for the worse. That doesn't mean I ignore stupid regulations that slowly turn the state into a bastion of socialism and slowly erode how businesses thrive.

Apparently this is a political issue with the people in this forum.
Now I am thinking they should make this optional but have all big stores implement this system.

I know I will sign up. You guys who are opposed can have extra trash when you walk out the door.
