Has anyone had trouble getting cable modems to work after switching brands? I've got a d-link dcm-200 , and it's scewing up on me, so I tried going to a motorola sb 5100. I cannot get the motorola to work at all. Are there any suggestions to what the problem might be?

Does your cable company need the MAC address of the new modem? Give them a call and tell them you got a new modem, they may just need to add the info to their database.

quite right, they need to verify your cable modem, otherwise anyone could just buy one and hook it up to the cable without paying. to do so they use the unique mac address that each modem has. there's usually a sticker on the back that says it.
