Buying M games in Canada

So, I'm a Canadian, I'm turning 17 in less than two weeks, and March Break is early this year. Now, during the break, my friends want me to get Call of Duty 4 so that we can all go and play it online, and it was something I eventually wanted to get anyway. Only problem is, I'm not 17 yet and in Canada, the stores do check for age. My parents don't get involved in these things anymore, as this is my own money and my own decision to buy it.

Now, the only reason I'm asking here today if I can buy an M game so close to my 17th birthday? Does 13 days really matter? If I can't, then I'll accept it and wait until the end of March break, but that means that I'll miss out on a week of gaming and no work. My friends got it by making a scene at the store where they bought the game, but I can't and don't want to do that. If I can, great. I'm reasonably mature and respectful.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

EDIT:

I am from Toronto, Ontario, and I have already bought the game.

Do you by chance have a friend that's 17? You could just give them some cash and let them get it for you.

Where in Canada do you live? where I'm from they didn't check for my age.. I remember buying Diablo II when I was under the M rating.

just find someone older... it cant be that hard

I was in a Gamestop buying UT2k4 back when I was 16 and the dude said, "You're 18 right?" and I turned around and there was a black dude behind me and I said, "Nah, but my brother George is here." Problem solved.

I went to futureflop a couple months back to pick up GOW.. when I brought it to the checkout the lady was like "... and I'm going to need to see some IDENTIFICATION" all pompous and shit. I didn't even realize what she was talking about at first. When I proved to her I'm 24 she just sort of grunted. Beeeyotch!

It really depends on the individual at the register. I'd say give it a go and if they ask for ID, show them yours... if they still say "sorry but you're 13 days early" then they're a huge douche. I'd go back to the gaming section and strike up a conversation with a fellow shopper, maybe they could help you out.

Lol to the first post, like hes going to be that much more mature to handle a game in 2 weeks. Dont take shit from dbags, get some random person to buy it or go to a store that will sell it to you. If there is spring break and you want to play with your friends, dont fucking wait because of some dumb ass rule.

Heheh I got carded for fricking Orange box... I just went "wtf, seriously?" and whipped out the ID... If you're 16, theres no way in hell you cant find someone who will do it for you, why not just ask your parents? not that hard...

Being 18 is wonderful though... I can just flash my birth cert for anything... Ironically, last time I was carded was when I was 17 ( i got carded alot, dunno why considering I have REALLY long hair... shit takes a long time to grow ;)

Hell, if you're in hamilton/ancaster I'll fricking do it

Walmart, they dont check. At least the one's near me dont check. My 15 year old cousin never get's carded there and he looks like he's 10. If that doesn't work try EB when there are a few people there, and if you get carded, get someone to get it for you. Actually if your near me (mtl) you wont even have to ask, someone will automatically offer to get it for you if they see/hear you get carded.

I'm not sure to call this a coincidence or some sort of irony, but I am in Montreal during March Break. Unfortunately, it's at the end. Oh well.

Just give it a shot. The worst that could happen is they won't let you buy the game. Hell, I'd do it for you, except you mentioned being in Montreal only at the end of the break, so I guess it would be kind of pointless :).

Well if you cant get it at the end of the break and still want it, send me a pm and depending on where and what store your near, Ill meet you there. It gives me a reason to go get a few games for myself as well.

I just had the though, but couldn't you just order it from newegg, gogamer, or some other online store (do they even ship to Canada?)?

What the hell?!?
I haven't been young in a while but I remember back when I was under 18 they never card me for any game I bought lol... how lame is that hahah...

Which province is that ?
Not sure they'd do that in quebec... we'll I've never heard of anything like that here anyways... plus drinking age at 18 !!! ;)
(not that it matters now but ... yea)

I'm from Toronto (Oh the humanity! :D) But thanks. I'm probably gonna go to Walmart near my house. I don't think they check. It's not too far from school, but I'm still waiting on a money return on a project I did in school which I've been waiting for for a good month ($160)

Will Steam let you buy it?

Have you tried Amazon.ca ?

Can't. I don't have a credit card. Most of my shopping goes through B&Ms.

Maybe make the hobo down the street buy it for you?

Because this would happen:

prolly would run off with cash and buy some mad dog 20/20s

Yeah, I can see where they're coming from, but I haven't seen that many changes since the stores stopped selling without ID a few years back. 10 year olds are still playing Halo 3 and GTA, and I have doubts if the system really works. Last night I was talking to one of the friends that wanted me to get COD4, and he couldn't believe that I had been able to attempt an enlistment into the Canadian Forces (Still trying, alas.) and yet I would blocked at the counter for buying COD4. C'est la vie, I suppose.

haha I remeber when conkors bad fur day came out on the N64. I was about 13-14 and walked into EB Games, I asked for the game, the guy started" You have to be 18 to buy this, but it is an awsome game so ok, just don't tell anyone" I was flabbergasted that he just let me buy it, not even walmart would sell it to me lol.

Oh the fun i had wiht that game hehe

Find someone who's already going into the store looking to buy something and have them buy it for you, then you pay them the cash after they buy it.

If they say they won't do it because you won't pay them...then just tell them they can return it unopened for the refund.

This isn't buying alcohol for a minor; I doubt anyone you ask (that's already in a game store/section) would refuse you.

lol WHAT? I live in canada and the only time i've ever get carded is buying the lottery and like, only 1/2 the time.

Some tips:
befriend an older dude,
go to some asian owned store, they don't care as much :)
go to some big department store, they don't care
go at the end of a work shift, they just want to leave
go to some newb looking cashier
engage in good talk with the cashier
just try some other stores if some cashier won't sell it to ya.

lol i'm still laughing that they actually do this.

they check for age in Canada? I've been buying cigarettes, beer, porn, alcohol, and mature video games since I was 13. Quebec rules.

You paid for porn???

hahahahah
oh man... you must really be in need.

Well, update. I went to Walmart, and I bought the game. The clerk didn't seem to mind that I was buying it, maybe I looked older than I am. No request for ID. Or maybe she just didn't care.

Anyway, time for some ownage... by which I mean me getting owned by everybody.

Back in the day I went in to the liquor store at 15 and bought a bottle of over-proof rum. No one asked me for I.D. This M rating on games is just stupid. London Drugs refused to sell Diablo II to a kid of about 12 because the game has an M rating. Geez, the game is just a cartoon FFS!

my lil bro buys M games all the time at the local EB (Manitoba), hes only 15, some places just don't care, especially if they hate their job.

Exactly !

I was about to tell the OP to give it a try because in Quebec in some places/stores they just don't give a damn; they make a sale and the required profit and that's it.

Occasionaly, some media will make a statement by asking a minor to buy cigarettes or lottery tickets at a convenience store and most of the time the sale will be made even though it's against the law.

Capitalism : Can't live with it, can't live without it. ;)

You're in Toronto? I can buy it for you.

Secondly, the store one block south of Yonge/Bloor (heading south on Yonge, of course), called GameCenter, will sell you your own mother. They don't care.

There's another store, another block south of that one above, that don't care either. Also, GameShack at Atrium on Bay (Dundas TTC Station) will sell it to you as well.

Bought it yesterday at Dufferin Mall. But thanks for the offer and locations.

1. Get a credit card from your parents and give them cash upfront.
2. Go to direct2drive.com buy a game and download immediately (Transfer speeds of up to 980KB/sec). DONE :)

I'm from Canada and I never got carded for M games when I was younger. Been buying them since Halo (the first one) and I was in grade 8 then. Weird that you're having problems, maybe it's different in other provinces (I'm in Ontario).
