Building Home network cabinet: advice needed for newbie

another setup would be:
3IhEzDW.png

witch one would be best knowing that :
- the AP's are maintly for internet access
- that the the ip cam's are HD, they stream one the internet
- the NAS is recording the IPcams HD stream.
- 2 of the 42 users need Hi bandwith internet access
- NAS is streaming Bluray quality (Hi bandwith needed) to 4 users

the rest is pretty standard.

Option #2 makes more sense in your case, I would however be careful about the ToughSwitch... Not too sure about trusting UBNT on switches...

About the router, if you want to go for the ERL just go for the 3-port version and get a simple 1U tray and Velctro. http://www.amazon.com/Raxxess-RAX-Unitray-Universal-Rack/dp/B0007OGTGS

If I were you, grab one Zyxel GS1920-48 and one Zyxel GS1920-24HP. They're good value switches and I doubt you'll find anything better at that price. Make sure that the APs (and IP cams) you choose are compliant with 802.3af/802.3at and not some proprietary crap.

If the HP 1620 has anything remotely similar to the UI of HP 1810 I'd avoid it (I find it really slow and not very intuitive although the one in HP 1910 is much nicer).

Just my 2 cents :)

I don't know any price comparison sites in .be but I think Jacob Elektronik ships to Belgium. I haven't had any trouble placing orders to Sweden at least.

Hi,

It's been some time since I gave an update, I have beel a little sick, and busy at work.
In the meantime I bought an edgeswitch POE 24G and a unifi AP Pro.

I only had time to basicly intall the AP Pro wich i'm very happy with. (still have to configure guest network)

But i have been thinking during those weeks (altought haven't decide wich main switch I'll buy) According to most of you the last diagram would be the best for me.

But i was thinking of creating Vlans, i have read a little about it, but not sure i would have benefits on it.

Following setting:
Vlan1: Home automation (needs internet access)
Vlan2: Security Alaram system (needs internet access)
Vlan3: IPCams (NO internet access)
Vlan4: Audio / Video streaming/players (needs internet access)
Vlan5: Data + Wifi + NAS (needs internet access)
Vlan6: Guest Wifi(needs internet access)

The problem i see here is than Vlan3 and Vlan4 need access to the NAS wich is in Vlan5
And with 5 HD IPcams recording 24/7 on Vlan3 and Bluray quality streaming on Vlan4, i'm affraid this setup might be worse than no Vlans since all this traffic will have to go through the router (Edgerouter ER8) .
Following setup is also an option:

Vlan1: Home automation (needs internet access)
Vlan2: Security Alaram system (needs internet access)
Vlan3: IPCams, Audio / Video streaming, Data + Wifi + NAS (needs internet access)
Vlan4: Guest Wifi(needs internet access)

any advice about this?

PS: I had a look at the user manuals and the interface of the 1620 looks exactly like the one of the 1910, 1810 looks much older...

You're doing this overly complicated, have the IP Cameras, Guest WIFI and possibly Security Alarm on separate VLANs and let the rest use the same VLAN. Use DHCP and/or Static IPs for the devices (I'd recommend DHCP with static leases) on your "main" VLAN.

Danne,

I knew you would be one of the first to reply ;-)
Wel that was also what i was thinking, KISS I guess...
Traffic from the HD Ipcams throug the router to the NAS won't be a problem according to you?

I was planning to go aal Static IP's, i don't know DHCP with staic lease, but i'll look in to it.

Thanks

Hi,

I hve been quite busy lately, but i'm looking at the following steps, i'm trying to puit my network on paper to see what i need and how to configure it.

One important (and probably the thing i'm not sure of) is that my STB need direct access to internet, so it means i connect them to the router and need to configure those ports as a switch.

Any idea if this is possible with the ER-8?

Here is a diagram of my setup, any advice is welcome.

VLAN 3 needs access to the NAS only
