I'm finally taking the plunge in building a NAS and setting up a home lab. I've been toying with the idea for a long time.

Since I'm limited on space, my better half has asked if I can downsize my desktop PC (it is rather gigantic in an ATCS 840 case).

The low power of the Avoton series has been very intriguing to me since my NAS will always be on and running.

Homelab Goals

Quiet and maximize space
  • For a rack, I have an IKEA Rast nightstand which will work as an 8U.
  • I also have a LACK table that I can use.

Use storage HDDs from gaming PC
  • Two 2TB Samsung HDDs
  • One 500GB Seagate

FreeNAS for storage
  • RAID-Z2
  • 6x 4TB = ~16TB total storage
  • Run from USB stick
  • iSCSI storage for VMs

VM Host
  • ESXi
  • Worth it to re-purpose the 2500k/Mobo of my current desktop? Built in 2011 and motherboard only has one LAN
  • pfSense - May split this off into a separate box
  • Plex Media Server (if not running it from NAS)
  • Red Hat Satellite
  • Puppet master
  • Redis

Case - NORCO RPC-450B - $89
HDDs - 6x 4TB HGST Deskstar NAS - $161 (~$966 for 6)
CPU/MOBO - SUPERMICRO MBD-A1SRi-2758F-O Mini ITX - $330
RAM - Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered 1600 (PC3 12800) CT2KIT102472BD160B - $155
