I have been looking at upgrading my home storage and I would like some advice on how to build an 8-bay or greater JBOD encolsure for as little money as possible.

I plan on populating this system with a bunch of 2TB HGST drives from eBay. I am open to DIY solutions such as this: 4U Supermicro Superchassis SC846E1-R900B 24 Bay SAS SATA Chassis JBOD Server

or commercially-available solutions, such as the Dell Powervault MD1000.

The other caveaut here is this system needs to be relatively quiet; I need to be able to sit in the same room.

CM Stacker 810 with some 4-in-3 drive modules? (old school tech)

I went down a different path and found something interesting... These bad boys are dirt cheap and they have SFF-8087 connectors on the back...

HP DL380 G6 G7 Server SAS Hard Drive Cage Kit 496074-001 w/ Backplane & Cables

I will need to figure out the wiring for that power connector but I believe there have been others who have pulled this off. This listing does not include trays but there are plenty of listings on eBay.
