Hey, all. Looking for a pair of budget 2.0 speakers for the wife. I was originally going to purchase the Audioengine A2 set for her but she thinks a bit expensive for her uses. Any recommendations in the ~$100 range? Thanks!

Well, if she's not much of an audio person, see what Staples and Office Depot have for low cost options locally. You could sneak something like this in there, see what she thinks, and potentially save the rest of the budget for your own setup. Food for thought.

If you wanted to max out the budget, smaller studio monitors from M-Audio, Samson, Behringer come to mind. I've seen "Genius" branded speakers linked a few times and thought they looked interesting. In any event, I'd say pay close attention to return policies before buying.

the monoprice monitors probably not a bad choice at all

or course the usually bookshelf + passive speakers route

Leapi 2020A+ $25~

Micca Motion MB42 speakers $59~

speaker wire ~$10

3.5mm to rca cable $2

You can probably find a new Cerwin Vega XD3 powered speakers on Ebay from less than $60 with free shipping. I bought my pair online and using it right now.

You still may want to get her the A2s. Many people (including myself) felt they would never need good sound from their PCs until they get a nice set of speakers and then its like "OMG how did I live with such ***ty sound for so long?". I remember my wife used to make fun of gaming mice (who needs a mouse specific for gaming?) until I got her the G5 and she will no longer use anything less than a good mouse.

You will have to see whether she is really that against spending the money for decent sound.

Edit: BTW its been like two years since I got myself the Daytons and I still get blown away by their sound (along with the HSU sub). Listening to music while I do some work or surf is an absolute joy. :)

My wife doesn't care if she's using my ARX A1's or a laptop's stock speakers. If she doesn't care don't waste the money in my opinion.

i think it is going to depend on the person really (or wife in this scenario)

my wife claimed to not care much about any of this audio stuff....... UNTIL.... I set up a minty vintage Pioneer SX-450 and some Teac LS-MC80 speakers for her

very compact (for stereo gear setup) vintage rig... I also gave her a vintage Sony Turntable which really got her into things...she loves vinyl apparently.

....but certainly not everyone's wife is going to respond in this way... I am very happy to say my wife has been sort of getting into it lately however.
