I'm just curious what this does. I've added someone, and as far as I can tell there's no difference. I'm sure I've missed it somehow.

 
You can go to your buddy list via "quick links" and see which are on. You can selectively pick multiple buddies to PM at the same time. Also, they show up with a + by their name under the users online for the main forum index.
