I discovered this title via Jesse Cox's 'The Greenlight' show on Youtube. It's basically an over the top, ultra violent, 90's action hero spoof, run and gun retro 2D platformer inspired by the likes of Contra, Metal Slug and co. The game will feature online and local 'bro-op' and many characters such as Rambro, BA Broracus, Bromando, Bro Dread and more.

From everything I've seen so far the game looks like lots of fun and I'm pretty much sure the game can appeal to anyone who loves the 90's era action heroes.

Play the Brotype!

- More levels with more explosions…and some torrential tyranny for good measure
- New bro introducing 1000% more chainsaws
- Cunningly disguised new miniboss
- Testosterone-fueled power metal
- Bees
- We’ve been hearing reports of bro’s suffering from fatal collapsing terrain accidents. So we’ve added scaffolding to levels for additional support.
- We are now carefully monitoring your every move inside and outside the game. If that doesn’t spell F.R.E.E.D.O.M, we don’t know what does.
Play it for free here! : http://www.freelives.net/BROFORCE/BROFORCE_WEB.html

I'm trying it out now.

Game looks pretty fun, even if the name sounds like a military themed gay porn.

So when do we get back to making games without "retro 2D" graphics?

While I am of those who think using 8 or 16bit graphics solely for the sake of nerdbaiting out of place, when you consider Broforce is a tribute to the 90's the retro 2D graphics make perfect sense. It is also a solution for developers who do not have the monetary resources to invest in the creation or license of advanced rendering engines.

Some games work much better with 2d engines than 3d engines, and honestly the retro style is fun for a lot of people.

Game graphics is just a visual form, not everyone wants or needs every game to strive for photorealism and fancy effects. In fact rather often retro graphics means better gameplay and photorealism means the game is going to suck is closer to watching a movie than actually playing a game.

This beta is long
I played for an hour last night and didn't beat it yet. I'm not sure how long it is, but the first "boss" isn't the end, I played 2 stages after that and thats where Im at now.

It seems to be harder, single player.

It's meant to be played with BROs

That was hilarious.

I wouldn't mind a bit nicer graphics though. Same general look, just higher resolution so things aren't quite so blocky. 2D is fine. Not enough 2D side scrolling games these days.

i clicked the youtube link thinking i'd watch for a few seconds and move along. i ended up watching all of the brotastic fun. this looks great.

I find the mechanic involving the two players high-fiving in order to have slowmotion during a limited time hilarious.

Player the Brototype. Solo only however but still that seemed like a lot of fun. And hard at the times! Needs a bit more enemy variety though.

Watched the entire vid. That game looks perfect to put on my HTPC with steam big picture mode and a couple of xbox controllers, beer, and friends.

I don't mind 2D graphics at all I just wish these were better 2D graphics.

NEO, bitches.

They also added Boondock Bros, Machete, and Conan

I like the way he's a fraction of a second away from dying at the end of that gif :p

Anyway, I've been a fan of Broforce since playing the Brototype last summer. The game is a lot of fun. It helps that I'm good at it by now, too. :D
